I run the chess club at my middle school.
10 kids signed up.
How should I plan the tournament?

Swiss?
Playoff bracket?
Something else?

I was thinking some kind of pool matches to start, with top four seeds going to playoffs...

10 is such a weird number.
It would be nice to get up to 12.

But if it is only 10 or 11, how should I do this?

Only 10? What's the time control? If it's short, as it oftentimes is for that age, you can do a round robin. Otherwise, do a swiss.
