I can't believe that our political debate has come down to "pics or it didn't happen".

eesh.

Well, I'm convinced.

Even better:

Is nothing beneath liberals nowadays?

I'm not saying anything one way or the other on this particular event. But you do know that this... happens, in a general sense, right?

I mean, there are groups with the explicit goal of "crashing" tea parties with racist or offensive signs to try and ramp up media criticism against them (as if the media needed help in that regard.) They have websites and everything.

To my knowledge there's zero evidence that this is the case here, but, at least on the face of things, this isn't a ridiculous impossibility.

Crash the Tea Party This website is what Dan_Frank is referring too. You can read their stated purpose on the opening page

What's an even less ridiculous impossibility is that an honestly-attending member said those things.

Is it less ridiculous? On the one hand, you have declaration of intent and the the manifestation of that intent, and on the other, unsubstantiated allegation.

It's not less ridiculous to suppose that in fact, the crash the tea party website is just a cover for a PRO tea-party group that wants to make liberals look bad by crashing their OWN event. And of course, that group is in fact ANOTHER liberal front to make the tea-partiers look like cold and calculating bastards.

So really, virtually any two correlated events are totally equal in ridiculousness.

If it doesn't fit you must acquit.

If you can equivocate, you need not investigate.

The Republican Party needs to quiet down the segment that seems intent on creating an alternative obviously-false reality, if it hopes to start advancing conservativism in a meaningful long term way.

Even if it were true -- and I find it highly doubtful -- presenting it as an explanation (without a shred of proof) is childish and politically idiotic.

Childish and idiotic I'll give you. Politically idiotic? Given that the poster children of current Republican rhetoric are Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin, and Michelle Bachmann, all of whom seem to be doing just fine among their base, I'm not so sure.

I suppose, again, that it is a good sign that this is embarrassing enough to some of the conservatives that they are pretending (or refusing to believe) that it happened.

Hitler did fine among his base. If war is an extension of politics though, he was politically stupid, or proved to be so in the end. Now, if any of those three people could manage to appeal to even their base without stooping to with lowest of cynical tactics to do so, and without irretrievably sacrificing their options in terms of actually relating to their opponents, I would call them politically smart. What they are is politically savvy, but that only gets you something in the short term, doesn't it?

That isn't Godwin by the way, I'm comparing situations outside of and people not in this discussion.

While I wouldn't personally get involved in this, I can't say I don't have sympathy for their cause. We've had tea party protesters come to many of our local events around here and cause a huge commotion. They even showed up at a non-partisan voter registration event and scared one of our new volunteers so much that she never came back. Again, all we were doing was registering voters, for whatever political party they felt like registering for. We weren't even handing out any partisan literature. It was appalling. These tea party people just needed any excuse to yell and scream and intimidate.

If Orin and I agree, is it a sign of the apocalypse?

At least they don't agree on the results of the agreement. Phew, that was close.

If there's one iron law of politics, it's that no matter how crazy you are, people who agree with you always seem more reasonable than anyone else.

This should be someone's sig. [Big Grin]

That's practically the definition of "reasonable".

That was my favorite quote, too, Kwea.

I think health care might be one of those issues where the opinions are far enough apart that everything looks crazy.
