Some background info... procurement company with small office of about 10 people.
The boss has terrible personal/relationship/management skills. She doesn't manage us as a company, but as individuals. She assigns tasks based on whoever doesn't look busy, not who deserves it or with any thought process. She yells all the time, which is extremely irritating in the small confines. There is no room for career growth, because we become inundated with meaningless tasks that take up all of our time. I am about middle of the totem pole, and on our reviews she doesn't think I am learning enough about the industry to move up in life. There really isn't a way to do that because all of my time is taken up with busy work. She recently hired someone at a higher salary than me, even though she is fresh out of college with little experience. This girl has the same degree and qualifications that I do. We get 10 holidays off, with 10 vacations days, and 3 personal/sick days. If there is inclement weather, we have to use one of our days. Overall, it is a miserable place to work at because she does not treat anyone with respect. She accidentally deleted a project that I was working on for several hours, and did not take any responsibly... and it is obviously up to me to make up the lost time. It is a standard 9-5 weekly job, but I take small/skip lunch daily, and usually get there 15 minutes early and leave at 5:30 on average. She has no vision for the company. Instead of hiring new workers or at least temps, she piles on the work. This in theory saves money, but cuts down on worker productivity. If she hired some low cost data-entry workers, that would free up other personnel resources to focus on expanding the business. In conclusion, all of these things add up to driving me crazy. In theory, it would be ideal to switch jobs, but as we all know that is extremely difficult in these times. I plan trying to start my family with my husband in about a year or two, so I am thinking of quitting then. I think I have to tough it out until then, but it gets harder every day. Even if I was lucky enough to switch at this moment, it wouldn't really be a wise career move considering the new family aspect. Even though she directs all of her actions and attitudes towards everybody, it is hard not to take personally. Since the order of command is rather linear, it is hard to commiserate with anyone there. The have their own set of problems dealing with her anyway. My husband thinks I should just up and quit now, which would hurt the company pretty bad for for awhile, considering all of my responsibilities. We would almost be breaking even each month if that happened, but my husband still thinks I should quit for my own piece of mind. I am beyond the point of working on my resume anyway, the stress of that makes my head want to explode. That is about all.... sorry for the rambling... I just went straight from the top of my head in no particular order. Thank you for all thoughts!

Kwea, thank you for responding. I know blobs of words don't make for the best reading, but I guess it just happened. Just trying to let out some steam.

Wow, that's a lot! It doesn't seem like your boss is not a very nice lady. I think you should do best and try and ignore and don't let it bring you down. I am not sure how that really happens in practice though. I hope every thing works out.

Any one have any ideas on helping this poor fellow?

Even with how bad the economy is, I generally agree with quitting now and see if you can get a retail job where leaving in a year or two to start your family would not be as devastating to a good boss. Maybe if her existing staff all walked out on her, she might possibly figure out that she has a problem. Probably not, but maybe.

I admire your concern for what that would do to the company, but I see little reason to afford her considerations that she can't be bothered to give to others.

Is there any possibility of getting her mad enough at you for something that she'll fire you? [Evil Laugh] At least then you could try to get unemployment out of her.

I would agree with quitting now and finding another job. Life is too short to be that miserable at work.

Thanks for the input all : >
Unfortunately it is hard to leave a bad day at work once you get home. The majority of your time is spent traveling and there. Blah. Trying to find the best way to not be miserable.

She's only ever fired 1 employee in the 15 years she's been in business.....she prefers to torture you into quitting first. Seriously, I've seen it done...

You know, you could edit that and insert some paragraph breaks. If it wouldn't ruin the vent value.

Is there anything in your current work situation that you can do or say to change how the boss treats you.

Goody, that would be a sight to see a whole office mutiny on someone.

On NPR they had a report of a new study that Kissing actually reduces stress levels.

No, I'm not volunteering. I don't know you well enough.

Nor do I suggest you and the boss relieve stress together.

I would just quit and find a part time job. But then again I don't handle situations like yours all that well.
