A silly question, but I'm curious. Personally, I've never been able to settle on something that consistently "works" for me. I've had my hair 2 and a half feet long (college), had it buzzed short--and everything inbetween. For the record, I have thick, straight brown hair and a very round head. I've tried parting in the middle and on both sides. I've tried flipping it up in the front, combing it back, spikes, and used every kind of hair product to find "my style". It's frustrating because I know people who know exactly what they want in their hair--even if they change styles every now and then. I just know that I want to look like less of a dork, but I have no idea what will look best on me. I ask the hair stylists, and I get different answers each time.

So--a hatrack poll. What does your haircut say about you?

Yeah, my hair grows really fast, so I'm constantly experimenting with longer or shoring it up to as much as a half an inch. I try different stuff and see what works, constantly.

What is this "change" you speak of?

I wear my hair in a ponytail 99% of the time. I have crazy, wild, fluffy and frizzy hair. I can't be bothered with having it in my face, and I'm insecure about how it looks too.

My hair is poker straight, very fine, and I have tons of it. There's not much I can do with it since its impossible to curl or do anything interesting with. I kept it short lengths through most of junior high and high school. I started growing it out during my second year of college because my boyfriend at the time liked it. I've also always had bangs because I look weird without them.

I'd actually like to cut it shorter again or maybe do something wild, but its hard because I get complimented on my hair all the time and I like the ego boost.

I'd rather dye it for a change. I've done blonde highlights, red, and dark brown. I like the dark brown but my hair doesn't hold dye very well so it gets expensive to do as regularly as my hair would need it.

Never.

It's either relatively long or relatively short. It's relatively long when I haven't been to the barber in over a month. It's relatively short when I've just been to the barber.

When you have awesome, brilliant red hair, there's no need to dress it up to impress people. [Razz]

I go to an art school, and a popular look among the girls is half the head shaved and half of it regular length. It's kinda hot, in a rebellious sort of way...

I bought hot rollers a few weeks ago for the first time since high school. It has changed my life.

Not really. But it has changed my hair, when I have the time to fuss with it for 30 minutes before heading out somewhere.

My hair is long, red, wavy if air-dryed and straight if blown-dry, and layered in the front. With that basic material, I can do anything.

Hair technology is great these days! When I was in high school I used to sleep on big rollers. How that was possible, I'm not sure. It was terribly uncomfortable, as I recall.

In college I would spend hours on my hair with a blow dryer and round brushes. I would put my hair into a ponytail when it was wet to keep it from drying too fast. Then one small section at a time I would blow dry then wrap up in a round brush using it like a roller. When I was done my whole head would be covered in round brushes. It took about a dozen. Then I had to redry each section, then sit with my head in brushes for half an hour while it all set. After that it was good until the slightest bit of moisture in the air would make it frizz up. In the southeast, that moisture usually took about an hour or two to hit. =) My roommate who had the same type hair as me actually pioneered this system. She considered rain an excused absence from school. Since she was there for her Mrs. degree, that was an appropriate choice. =)

Now, though, various gels and mousses have made it so that I can spend about 1 hour with a hair dryer using a diffuser, and just go curly. Instead of fuzzing up, my hair makes a nice soft tousled mop that way, somewhat indicative of what's going on on the inside of my head. The other thing I can do is pull it back into a severe-old-lady bun. Then if you misbehave, the severe-old-lady will glare at you. =)

I don't actually change my hair hourly, but the weather still has an inordinate effect on what goes on with it.

I'm not all that daring with my hairstyle, although a year ago I chopped it up to shoulder length and last month I had it highlighted.

I've gone with longer hair most of my adult life, but I recently decided that overly long hair doesn't work that well on me because it's so thin.

I've known for a long time that overly short hair doesn't work on me for the same reason.

I've tried layers a few times but consistently hate it.

I am not a fan of the new razored styles and in fact, I don't pay much attention to modern hair trends because one inescapable truth about hair is that not everyone's hair will accept the same styles.

I think the highlighting is working for me. It's giving me that taste of something different while keeping my hair in the same basic tried and true style that I've found through trial and error. Next time, I may go all out and dye the whole thing, although I think my husband may have a fit. [Smile]

Sometimes I wear it up and sometimes down but my basic hairstyle has been the same for 30 plus years except for an experiment with bangs about 20 years ago. The colour has changed, though. [Wink]

My hair has been long and very short. It's currently fairly short, with bangs. Most of my life I parted it in the middle, but now it's kinda parted on the side. I have dark hair and straight, and when I started to gray I started to color it, but now that I'm about to turn 50 (yikes!) I've decided to stop the coloring and I think I actually like my salt and pepper style! I like to have the hair cut out around my ears, and it can't get too long in the front because my eyes are really sensitive.

When my hair gets long enough to actually be comb-able, I shave it back down to about 1/4" long. I spend about 30 minutes a month on my hair, including cutting, washing, and combing.

It's like India.Arie says, "I am not my hair."

OK, that's a strange comparison. LOL

My style changes over the course of the day. I start off styling it straight back in a greaser-esque fashion in the morning. As the day drags on my hair shifts to a parted style with it flowing to my left. It's kind of funny, I prefer the parted to the left look, because my hair gets some volume to it in the front. I just can't get that style to happen deliberately in the morning, so I go with the greaserish look because I know by the end of the day it'll look how I want it to.

I love to try new things. I am finding I don't dye it as much as I used to. Blond is fun but washes me out some, I adore red but the color fades fast, and brown just isn't as exciting to me. Though for some reason the dark brown dye made it seem lighter than the medium brown dye. I guess is just closer to the real color?

My prefered length is somewhere between chin and shoulders. Bobs, layers, I'm not picky. This summer I chopped it all off becuase the air conditioner at work kept breaking and I'd had enough. I'm back up to 2 1/3 - 3 inches worth on top, but I'm having trouble getting it longer. For some reason "cut the sides and the back and blend the top" seems to mean chop the top back off to most stylists. This last one cut the least off of anyone, so I'll probably go back to her again.

Short is fun, but growing it back out is more of a pain than I expected.

I've been going with the Mike Cutter look for a while now and loving it. That said, I used to have a ponytail.

Thanks to male pattern baldness, I don't have enough hair for a 'style', so once a month I snap the 1/8" spacer on the clippers and halve the length of my hair. [Big Grin]

Since I have to conform to military regulations, I use a #2 head on a pair of clippers when it gets too long. Paying for haircuts every two weeks gets expensive.

My wife had hair to her waist when we started dating. She went really short when the babies started pulling it and she didn't want to spend the time styling. Now the kids are older and she wants to grow it but always gives up in the middle length ugly stage. Now she's trying to grow it with style so she is at the salon all the time.

Of course, this question is different for men and women. I feel grubby when my hair gets long.

The most embarrassing pictures are the ones where you were "in style". #2 may not be fashionable but I'll never be ashamed of the picture. For a woman, long and straight will never be embarrassing either. Cool today is ridicule tomorrow.

Excessively manipulated hair generally doesn't look good in the long run--I agree. Anyway, I am growing out my hair. It's down to the base of my jawline, but I'd like to get it to my shoulders. I have very thick hair that is wavy/curly, so I think it suits me. Last time I went to a salon to get it cleaned up, the guy asked if he could straighten it for fun to see what it would look like. He seemed to love it, but I thought I just looked like an emo. Conclusion: I am not going to straighten my hair.

I look like a nazi with short hair, and with long hair I look like a garage band member. I dont cut my hair for good reasons.
