Genshiken is an Otaku-centric anime about a group of friends participating in the Club for the Study of Modern Visual culture, in practice its a club that bridges between the gaming, manga and anime clubs.
It has a good well rounded cast of excellent voice actors, excellent character development, and peers at the Otaku subculture pretty deeply enough to make me grin in understanding.
Also includes a widely popular show within a show Kujiki Balance which got its own series.
What makes me now officially idolize the show to deific status is when Ohno's (Awesome name) friends from the States come over and speak actual full english sentances, its engrish with the quality shifting from Bad in Ohno's case to pretty good with Angela but it doesn't make me wince like some dubs do because its just strangely endearing.
It showed effort on their part, it helped to further immerse me in the show and also to show me what I'ld probably sound like if I ever went to Japan
Shows with foreigners should go to the effort to speaking the foreign language, its awesome.

Thanks Blayne, I will check it out. I'm usually into the Sci Fi type animes but this sounds interesting. Is it a comedy?
Do you know of any good Sci Fi animes that are recent?
I've seen:
Noein Heroic Age Robotech Gundam Gilgamesh Crest of the Stars
Have you seen The Twelve Kingdoms? The novels have been translated into English and are being released by Tokyo Pop. I have the first three and I believe the fourth is out or is coming out soon. From what I can tell the translation is top notch.

I've watched Planet ES. That is the one about the trash men in space correct? I laughed so hard during the moon ninja episode.
I included Macross in with Gundam. Isn't Macross an off shoot of Gundam? (or vice versa?)
Is there a domestic release of Genshiken right now? If it has not gotten licensed here in the US yet is there any fan sub groups that have released it?

Yep, that's Planetes. The manga's very good (and different enough to be worth consuming additionally), if you like manga.
Macross is definitely not an offshoot of Gundam; they're just the two major space epics of anime. A common analogy is that Gundam is to Star Trek as Macross is to Star Wars.
Also, both regularly come out with new iterations. Macross Frontier is the most recent macross, and is extremely good. Gundam 00, the most recent Gundam, is only meh.
Genshiken is available on DVD in the US, at least the first season. I don't think the second season is yet, but I could easily be wrong.
