Since this is the sort of thing that has long "seemed rude" without having a concrete breach of etiquette to point to, I'm kind of pleased to hear this.

errrm... Folks tend to find discomfort in being near someone havin' a conversation with thin air. And constantly pressing a small box against ones ear is odd in itself. Pretending that combining the two somehow makes everything okay is just delusional.
