Since this is the sort of thing that has long "seemed rude" without having a concrete breach of etiquette to point to, I'm kind of pleased to hear this.

No, no...Nextel conversations are just as annoying, if not more so.

errrm... Folks tend to find discomfort in being near someone havin' a conversation with thin air.
And constantly pressing a small box against ones ear is odd in itself.
Pretending that combining the two somehow makes everything okay is just delusional.
