It is cool, but at the risk of being a total killjoy, I have to wonder how much it costs per slide. Some awesome technologies are hindered by being impractical.

The cost isn't prohibitive. But as some one whose done some research on these things, they aren't nearly as cool as the pop sci article implies.

The main caveat here is that the array doesn't scan for anywhere near "all the bacteria and viruses we know of." As the article itself says, the next version of the array will expand the probeset five-fold, and the panel of target pathogens will be more than doubled. It's very cool technology, for sure, but this current model is just scratching the surface of its potential.
