My stressed out husband just gave me the go ahead to book a much needed vacation. He wants to go lay on the beach, drink beer and leave the BlackBerry at home. Seven days of sand, sun and relaxation. No kids, dogs, phones, etc.
I'm in shock.
I'm also clueless.
I'd really love your input on the best beach vacation you've personally experienced or have heard about.
Any tips you have will be so appreciated.

If affordable rustic cottages surrounded by tropical rain forest, only a few dozen feet from the Caribbean Sea and far from the crowds is what you are looking for, this is the place. The snorkeling is great too.

In my experience, its either one or the other. If you have an unlimited budget, you might be able to get both but I've never been in that position.

Marina Ballena state park, in Bahia, Costa Rica. Waaaay off the beaten track. I've lived there for several months at a time. There's a nice little hostel/bar/restaurant there, about a 20 minute walk from the beach, called the Tucan Hotel.. The owner is an incredible guitarist. They have great live music.
Come to think of it, it's the rainy season. You might want to wait until the dry season starts in December.

It's the HOTTTT season in the Dominican Republic where my sister lives. I'd go there anyway, but my husband wants to be completely alone. No family even on the same island...ha! It's the rainy season in Costa Rica. I assume the weather is similiar right now in Tobago...right?

The Big Island of Hawai'i is very remote. The North side of the Island is the perfect balance between rainy and dry, and it's always between 75-80 F, year round. There's not a lot to do, unless you enjoy hiking on cooled lava, surfing, or browsing antique shops.

worst person to ask, given that i can derive the same enjoyment from a beachside motel in cape may as i can from a massively decadent resort stay in luxury Caribbean destinations
BUT wailea (on maui) and Caneel Bay deserve a shout-out.

Montserrat. You can get a private villa with a private swimming pool for well under $1,000 for the week. It is also one of the few islands in the Caribbean free of biting insects.
