So tomorrow I have a new job interview, and as usual I would love any advice or well-wishes Hatrack could provide me.

It's going to be the strangest job interview of my young life. I say that because it is for a position at the university where I already work. And the position is in a department in which I almost already work and have lots of interaction with.

I'll explain. I currently work as a scanning operator for Enrollment Management. EM is not a department every university has, but it serves essentially as a bridge between Admissions and Financial Aid. When I started my job 4 years ago we had no scanning at all, and I just did data entry and front desk work for both Admissions and Financial Aid.

I have the bare minimum knowledge of how the financial aid office works. I have extensive knowledge and experience with every piece of software our university uses. And I know and am on friendly terms with the head of the Financial Aid office.

So I decided to throw my hat in the ring for the open position of Loan Counselor, and I think I might have a decent shot. Tomorrow I go in for an interview. But I wanted to run it by you folks because I'm sure someone out there has info on what a loan counselor does and what they need to know. (Rivka, don't you work in financial aid?)

They plan on training whoever they end up hiring, and I have those advantages I mentioned, but I'd like to get as many advantages as I can before I go in. It promises a higher salary, so I'd like to do all I can to seal the deal. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I do. [Smile] What would you like to know? You want links, a summary of the current transition from FFELP to DL, what?

Links would be good. I'm looking for more of the basics than the current change with FFELP, but that couldn't hurt.

This site is a great resource: http://www.finaid.org/educators/

And you might want to skim some listserv archives, especially those of FINAID-L. (See http://www.finaid.org/educators/maillists.phtml)

The interview went well. Haven't heard back yet, but was told that they would let me know whether I got it or not.

He laid it out to me pretty straight: I know all the systems at the university but would need to be trained in the financial aid portion. The others who have applied are trained in financial aid, but would need to be trained in the university systems. He has to decide which he wants to do.

So I have no idea yet. [Smile]

You know about the sequence of Direct Loan webinars through ED, yes? If not, you may want to sign up. They recently added additional dates.

Also, if you'll be using EDExpress at all, there's a webinar tomorrow that was recommended last week by my trainers at the Department. (I did the week-long Basics course last week.) I'm actually signed up for the July session -- 11 am Eastern is just too early.
