Just to clarify: I'm not opposed to Bioshock 3, and I imagine it will be a decent to excellent game. I was just hoping for something more exciting from the ultra secret Irrational project.

I think a game that goes in such a different direction (tee hee, literally) from Bioshock is new and different enough to be interesting, period. Gameplay will probably be pretty similar, but honestly I doubt they would have been making some radical genre-defying-masterpiece if they hadn't been making another FPS.

They made a patent for a Bioshock game, so it was going to be Bioshock.

Besides Bioshock wasnt perfect. Make a better one before reinventing yourself.

Boy, these Randian futuristic dystopias in the early-to-mid 20th century are apparently a dime a dozen! [Wink]

Still, though, looks very cool. I doubt it will be as new and exciting as Bioshock - I chose those words carefully - but then neither was Bioshock 2, and I still thought it an awesome game.

The next obvious fear to address is claustrophobia. They'll call it Bioshock: Infinitesimal.

While my interest is definitely piqued, what I don't get is why this is called Bioshock in the first place. What connection does it have with the original game? Also, is that thing in the trailer a big daddy?

It is called "Bioshock" because the frat boys wouldn't buy a game called "Columbia."

It'll probably be the same kind of hybrid RPG shooter that Bioshock was. Only I hope its better. More/Better boss's, non linearity, no hacking, and dont drag for four extra hours plz.

Also, air ship battles with a customizable airship.

While I'm not sure I agree with the decision, I don't think it's inherently unreasonable for "Bioshock" to be the name of a... genre, I guess, as opposed to a particular storyline. It's like "Dungeons and Dragons" as opposed to "Ebberron." So basically, Bioshock is the name for their "semi-steampunk stories with plasmid based FPS gameplay and ideology-gone-wrong subthemes."

It's jarring since this is the first departure from Bioshock meaning "story set in Rapture." But after another game or two it won't feel weird. And you may note that there is nothing about the word "Bioshock" that is specific to the original story. If it means anything, it's referring to the way plasmids mess with your biology.

That trailer screams "dream sequence" to me, so maybe it will be in Rapture still.

Then again, I haven't played Bioshock 2, so who knows...

We'll call it the 'shock' genre.

also

"Former Pinkerton agent Booker DeWitt has been sent to rescue Elizabeth, a young woman imprisoned in Columbia since childhood. Booker develops a relationship with Elizabeth, augmenting his abilities with hers so the pair may escape from a city that is literally falling from the sky. DeWitt must learn to fight foes in high-speed Sky-Line battles, engage in combat both indoors and amongst the clouds, and harness the power of dozens of new weapons and abilities."

Speaking just in terms of story, I don't have a problem with the concept of another Bioshock setting outside of Rapture. Bear in mind, this is a world where science in many areas far, far outstrips even what's possible today, and it's too much to imagine that everyone with that sort of ability got snapped up by Ryan.
