My 7 year old son is becoming more and more interested in "geeky" pursuits, and I tend to indulge him -- but I'd like to get away from video games and closer to more traditional games.

I have to admit, I've never played much in the way of board games or miniatures. I played a lot of pen and paper (D&D, Shadowrun, Paranoia, Star Wars) and LARP, but I've never played any of the "board game" style RPG's.

So, what games would be good for a 7 year old (with a 6th grade reading level) and his parents to play? I'm thinking Heroscape might be fun, but I'm more interested in RPG-style games like Descent: Journeys in the Dark, Heroquest, or the Ravenloft Board Game (none of which I've played). Does anyone have any good suggestions?

My 6-year-old daughter loves Heroscape, and makes it plenty RPGy on her own. [Smile]

I OWN Descent, but only for the figures and the tileset, which I use for the RPGs I run. (For some reason couldn't find anything else that provided Dungeon tiles that actually snapped together. All the official D&D tiles slip around too easily).

Mrs. BB and I have greatly enjoyed Dungeonquest. It's a different game every time, the first game takes a bit of time to learn but it sinks in pretty fast IMHO. 2-4 people can play at the same time, and while the players are not teamed up or attacking each other, there is still a robust system for players to get in each other's way.

It also teaches the importance of risk and knowing when to quit. There are also multiple strategies for winning.

All in all, everything I like in a game.

Old school: Talisman. From what I recall, it's more simplistic bash-em gear up board games. Arkhan Horror might be a bit advanced reading-level, but it's very immerse and you take turns reading the events (in amusingly dramatic fashion, hopefully).

Or just try to browse Board Game Geek for some suggestions. [Smile]

Descent, Rune Quest, Dungeon Twister, Dungeons and Dragons: Castle Ravenloft Board Game, House on the Hill, Talisman, Hero Quest

House on the Hill is fun- explore/build a haunted house and then bad things happen- one guy evil, rest try to survive.

Rune Quest- lower re-playability but simpler rules and is fun still.

Last night on earth- evil zombies try to kill you

there is a cooperative buffy that is surprisingly fun (well, one bad guy, rest play good guys).

Lord of the Rings has a cooperative game everyone versus the game.

Knights of Camelot is also semicooperative (there is a traitor card so don't know who or even if there is a traitor. Several quests you need to fulfill to win.

Thanks, everyone, for the suggestions. I ended up getting the Dungeons and Dragons: Castle Ravenloft Board Game and two Heroscape Master Sets.
