I don't have many fears but natural disasters takes top priority, mostly because they seem unstoppable.... Strong winds, shaking ground, raining fire....
I will admit earthquakes seem a little weak on land, but then what they happen under the sea we have a whole'nother problem...
Because these things are scary, I try to think of ways to stop them, for earthquakes I don't believe anything can be done about these, but for volcano's and tornado's-maybe even hurricanes they seem stoppable... -- Volcano- rather harmless when they are dormant, or somewhat leaky like Hawaii's, the key thing here is pressure, instead of letting them erupt and put the world under a blanket, we could just puncture the pits and let it drain slowly onto the land in a controlled manor- i.e. a pit or channel leading elsewhere... No pressure, no boom!
Tornado/Maybe Hurricanes- Cause by cold air from the sky dropping and the hot air from the ground rising, this one seems simple, either make the hot air cold or the cold air hot .___. for a normal tornado this should be easier, just a decent sized missile fire it into the clouds where the tornado is/or forming and have it explode, the change in temperature and possibly air pressure should hinder a tornado eh? For a hurricane this is questionable, very questionable, because of it's massive size, I don't believe any weapon we have now could generate enough heat to stop one without causing serious environmental damage /:
Thoughts and ideas? --- Also have you guys/gals heard about a tornado generator being used to make electricity? I do believe I read something about one being designed in PopSci..

Natural disasters don't hold a special place of fear for me. By their nature they are largely unpredictable, and the best you can do is prepare and then wait. Hard to be afraid of something like that, to me.
I have a moderate fear of heights. And I'm terrified of drowning. Other than that, I'm good to go.

That is why I love Las Vegas. No natural disasters. Well, unless you count 120 degree weather in the summer as a natural disaster.
I don't really know how we could stop natural disasters. They have been happening since the beginning of the earth.
I'd guess that before we stopped a natural distaters we would need to ask ourselves if there was any way our meddling could have a negative impact.

I don't think you understand exactly how much energy is involved with tornados, let alone hurricanes. The circulation that drives most tornado-producing storms is huge and involves hundreds of square kilometers (at least!) of moving air. One little missile won't be able to disturb that.

That's thing people forget...nature cares nothing for you. It does what it does. And your species will either survive or not. Understanding how things work helps a little bit, but you aren't going to control the fierce violence that is also an integral part of Earth's natural systems. And if you do? Then you get to be the Mad Scientist Overlord of the planet.

I live in a Tsunami flood zone. When Japan had that big quake they closed down the beach that's 100 yards from my house. I asked the local PD if I should evacuate, they said no. Fun.
