CBS is reporting that a man was arrested and a device in his vehicle was "rendered safe." It isn't yet verified that the device was an explosive, but it's been reported that the man was found with Ammonium Nitrate, used (for example) in the OKC bombing and the 1994 WTC bombing.

Nah...this is the second arrest near the Pentagon this week. No one paid attention to the last time (although in that case it was a wacko with a gun rather than a bomb), so I doubt anyone will really pay attention to this one either (unless it turns out it really was a bomb and it actually was a threat to the Pentagon).

BTW, fixed that for you.

Only three things sell news: sex, war, and lies. Oh, and cute little animals doing silly things.

In this case, we stopped him, and that's a good thing, and therefore not news. People don't care about happy stuff, not unless it directly affects them. Also, people continue to watch the news because they hope the bad things will stop. As a consequence, the news keeps churning out scary stories. It's like a never-ending circle of sadfaces.

and for some, a voracious feeding of their reclusion and social anxiety, especially if they're old

which I'm watching happen way, way too bizarrely much.

Update: the detained individual is a Marine Reserves lance corporal named Yonathan Melaku, a naturalized US citizen, originally from Ethiopia. At the time of his arrest he claimed to be carrying explosives, and an undisclosed amount of ammonium nitrate was found in his bag (although it was not in an explosive form). He was also carrying a notebook in which was written (among other things), "Taliban rules" and "mujahid defeated croatian forces."

It doesn't look like it was a real threat, certainly not an immediate threat, although reporting still isn't making it clear whether this is just a troubled individual with a half-baked plot or if it was somebody serious who was interdicted during a planning phase of an operation. My guess is the former, but the evidence in reports seems to fit the latter description as well.

also included was a stereotypical villain mustache that he would be able to twirl while saying 'ha ha ha, I am evil, and bad'

yeah this just sounds straight-up crackpot. At least he didn't hurt anyone as part of his, uh, plan.

According to the Washington Post:
quote:
Law enforcement sources confirmed that the man detained in the incident is Yonathan Melaku, 22, of Alexandria. A man with the same name was arrested by police after more than 25 cars in Leesburg were damaged in the early morning hours of May 26.

I got lucky this morning - I live near the Pentagon and one of the roads I take to work was closed, but the section I needed was open and heading away from the Pentagon.
