The GOP's supercommittee picks are out. ThinkProgress has been tweeting fun facts about the appointees, such as the fact that they didn't pick a single woman.
Jon Kyl, of course, we fondly remember for trying to defund Planned Parenthood, claiming that abortion was ninety percent of what it did, and spawning a comedy meme when a staffer clarified that it was "not intended to be a factual statement."

As far as the second comment, it may not be true, but it's not unbelievable. He lives in the same part of Texas that Dubya is from. I've lived there too. I was unimpressed by the rich folks there, and I met a fairly large number, since I went to SMU.

Dude, you can meet people anywhere who'll make similar 'jokes' about their targeted opponents. It's not hard.
I do wonder, though, if it happened, why a man of such heroic principles didn't speak out. Or for that matter, do so in the past when such remarks were made...thus making the likelihood of dining together with them unlikely...thus my point.

You'll note that none of the Senators appointed where on the Gang of Six. I think that shows right there how much faith Reid and McConnell had in that plan.
Pelosi hasn't announced her picks yet, I don't think, but they could be telling. The whole SuperCommittee thing is interesting. So long as Congress doesn't muster up the will to overturn the automatic doomsday triggers, this group really has to come up with something in a couple months. The easy part is that most of the heavy lifting has already been done. These things have been researched to death, it's just a matter of negotiating. There's no reason why they can't come up with something unless they just can't agree and get over it.
What's troublesome is that many of the forces involved have histories of staunchly defending various aspects of spending. Kyl loves the military, for example, which is prime ground for cutting waste and extra spending. At least some spending NEEDS to come from the military. But if he puts his foot down, who knows? Yet, it only takes ONE person from the other party to flip to make a deal go. It's a simple majority. That actually makes things much, much easier.
This could really be interesting. Or it could be a trainwreck.

the way this supercom is going to work, to me, would be kind of like watching britain have a system in which three people from Labour and three people from the BNP get together and 'compromise' and find 'middle ground' for the country.

Have you ever seen a slow motion video of a guy getting railed in the giggleberries by an aluminum bat? Whenever I hear about this repugnant and ridiculous idea of "supercongress," it's all I can think of. An innocent bystander, minding his business, working hard, when *BAM*! Right in the plums.
