I just hope this isn't going to be the live action version of Titan A.E. In my opinion Titan A.E. was one of the worst movies I've ever seen, and I saw The Mummy Returns.

I can't remember much about the movie, but I do remember having a generally positive impression of Titan A.E.
I'm one of the people who thought that The Village was pretty decent, and I liked Signs too. I tried watching some of The Happening and it was horrible. But Unbreakable was great.
I think he's probably got more good movies in him.
As to why people still let him make movies, even The Happening made money.

The Happening didn't make money because it was a good film though. The Happening made money because it had M. Night's name attached to it, and he had some hits previously with The Sixth Sense, Signs, and Unbreakable. I enjoyed Lady in the Water, more due to Bryce Dallas Howard and Paul Giamatti than the actual script. The Sixth Sense had strong performances from Willis and Haley Joel Osmont.
After The Happening and The Last Airbender though, I'm over him. The guy showed so much promise, but it really seems like he doesn't care anymore if anyone likes his movies or not. I mean, he said this:

"And it was because the entire stadium was there to see him be spectacular. They were like, 'I don't want you to disappoint me or hurt me.' I'm no Michael Jordan but maybe I get a little of that... Reviews of my movies often spend a lot of the time talking about me, not the movie!"
Perhaps the reason people talk about you Mr. Shayamalan instead of your movies is because they don't know what the hell was going through your head when you made the steaming pile of crap they just had to endure for two hours!
Sorry for my rant. I just think that he needs to be a little more humble about his failures and learn from them other than just write it off.

I never saw The Happening, on the recommendation of everyone in the world. Though I did see The Last Airbender, fully expecting something bad, and I wasn't disappointed, and thus wasn't so terribly disappointed with the film. I mean, it was awful, but I could sort of imagine being ten and enjoying it.
Other than that, I actually really like/love Shyamalan movies.

Titan AE was a solid B (A- if you are under 10).
Six Sense was an A (the first time though, HJO's future super creepy performances has marred the rewatchablity for me [think AI and Pay it Forward])
Unbreakable was a C+ but could have been an A with a strong editor and some new lighting.
Signs was a B+
The Village was a B+
Lady in the Water was a C, some good acting, but a very confused script.
The Happening was a D+ (most of the movie is enjoyable, as it is a giant mystery, but the end is so piss poor that it makes the journey feel cheap once you know)
I never saw the Final Oxygen Twister, as I never followed the show and it got bad reviews.

Titan A.E. was not good. I quickly tired of the "Let's be angry because being angry is cool" premise. I felt emotionally robbed because the novelization which I read years ago had some kind of depth in it, whereas the movie itself was an adolescent romp with a grossly simplified plot.
And everyone was angry. What was with the arched eyebrows? I mean, everyone had them. Even the bug aliens. Even the pig aliens. Even the random bat aliens had a mean look. I figure that looking mean is looking serious and as such is looking cool, but it didn't work when they frowned when they smiled, when they laughed, when they slept.
The Drej didn't look mean. And they didn't look cool either. And they sounded like Charlie Brown's teacher. I mean, at least in the novel you understood their intent. You learned who they were and what they were trying to do. But in the movie they were a voiceless, pointless menace.

But that's not the point of this thread. I've only seen Signs, The Sixth Sense, and The Village. So I can't say that I think he's terrible (from what I've seen). But from what I've heard, yes, he's pretty bad. That doesn't necessarily stop people from making movies. I mean, look at this guy. He's still churning them out.

I've always thought of Will Smith as a savvy businessman and so I'm surprised that he would be involved with M Night Shymalan at all. After a promising start, he ran his career into the ground. Not once, but several times. He seems like an odd choice to invest in.

He could finally give up on his repeating problems, and tap into the creativity and skill that allowed Sixth Sense in the first place. Perhaps that script has more promise than The Last Airbender had disappointment.

Don Bluth has made some great films. In my opinion The Secret of Nimh still rivals if not exceeds most Disney Films.
