quote:
Be it resolved North America faces a Japan-style era of economic stagnation.
PaulKrugman arguing the affirmative (we're doomed), Larry Summers arguing negative (we'll be OK). Pretty hardcore.

Listened to it in the background while getting other work done at home. It's very accessible and I found it quite enjoyable. I find myself leaning towards Krugman's analysis.

Currently listening:
I'm amused how Krugman points out right at the beginning that the "North America" title doesn't really apply because Canada doesn't fit in.

I was also going to point out how the lower classes in the US would be lucky to "suffer" through a Japan-style lost decade due to their lower unemployment rates and social programs. Ah well.

Hmmm, I'm probably not there yet.

Edit: Reached Ian Bremmer, funny but especially not impressed by the "where else are you going to go?" argument. Couldn't we be all boned?

Ooo, reached big Canadian idea.

I like to be an economic optimist, but is there that many people who expect that it's likely that, say, the Euro will pull through? Or that our legacy issues compounded by the fact that Congress has become completely useless and paralyzed, well beyond the ability to grant government the ability to fix genuine long-term issues like our collapsing educational system, isn't supposed to, at some point, bite us in the ass?
