I'm surprised this isn't bigger news. Viable eggs and sperm from stem cells would allow a lot of people who currently can't have children to reproduce. You'd think gay couples would be overjoyed.

I'm thinking that we should create a superbaby with Abe Lincoln as the father and Marilyn Monroe as the mother. Or maybe we can cross Tesla and Einstein? Or make a clone army of Schwarzenegger / Teddy Roosevelts?

They look too nice to be unnecessary. Programmable women on the other hand...

If anything, this renders men obsolete first.

Yep. Though I suspect men and women will still engage in sex and *gasp* sometimes unprotected!

Would synthetic bacon be kosher?

Couldn't you just engineer the pigs without hooves?

My wife and I wanted to have kids of our own, but she had to have her uterus removed. She still has ovaries, but she is very allergic to any hormone treatment, so trying to harvest an egg to implant in a surrogate mother isn't really an option, either.

This new technology sounds viable, though it would probably be too late before it is ready for humans, if it ever works on humans.

Doubtful. Also, why would that help?

That's impossible. If men were first up to be obsolete, why do we make more money?

Oh, I thought it was the hooves that did it. It's the lack of cud-chewing. Learn something every day!

It is, but that's because it is reminiscent of "let's start by assuming a spherical cow" jokes.

Cows are kosher. Pigs are not. Deduce. [Wink]

what if a pig was evolved by stem cells to become sapient, acquired language, and of its own volition declared that it wished to convert to judaism

Thought:

1. Imagine all babies were made this way in the future.

2. All humans would be spayed and neutered.

3. Let the fun begin!

As long as it wasn't a cannibal?

There were some pigs who ate a farmer the other day, so I'd say they're already out for revenge.

We may end up spayed and neutered anyway.

I think this is very interesting actually. It's a bit scary, but could be really awesome in some ways.

So that then begs the question, if two men can now reproduce, is gay marriage still immoral?

You'd still need a female cell with two X chromosomes to make an egg cell.

Sperm carry either an Y or an X, so (as far as little old I know) all you need is two female sperm and you have a female zygote (using this new technology, obviously).

Also, female eggs don't have two X chromosomes, they have but the one.
