Anyone else going to get pounded by the hurricane?

I live in Toms River, NJ. There is a uncanny chance I will get to see the eye up close. Good times.

We are bunking up and riding it out. The only problem I see is taking water in the basement. Many people will see much, much worse.

Last year I lost power for 3 days. This looks to be a bit longer if(when) it goes out.

Wish me luck!

My classes and exam are cancelled today due to the hurricane. I guess that gives me more time to study.

I live in Queens NY, but not in any of the low-lying areas. My parents, my wife's parents, my siblings all live out on Long Island where there is a mandatory evacuation which they are ignoring. Kinda mad at them about it. The thing that is keeping them staying is the fear of looters.

NYSE and NASDAQ trading suspended for the day, Morgan Stanley's main campus is closed, so I really just don't have to do anything.

Storms like this remind me to appreciate living in the Sonoran desert. The most common way weather can kill you here is if you don't hydrate, even then it is only a couple tourists a year. So I guess what I'm saying is "move to Arizona, just don't go hiking in the first year."

Armoth: Would it help alleviate your relatives fear if you told them how to ensure that no information that could be used to steal their identities would be left behind if someone did ransack the house? Just take any mail, laptop/harddrives and such. Anything really to get them out of harms way.

Someone was visiting me from the east coast. Was just supposed to be a weekend trip, but so much for that; she's stranded here for the time being.

(neither of us really mind though)

My cousin and her husband are trapped in DC until the storm passes. They tried but couldn't get a flight back to Houston, flights were all booked up and then canceled.

My co-worker's husband has the reverse problem: He was supposed to fly to D.C. today for a conference, but all flights are cancelled until Wednesday (and the Tuesday & Wednesday sessions are also cancelled, unsurprisingly).

Just heard from everyone. They all lost power. A tree landed in my brother's pool (thank God it didn't hit his house). My in laws and my sister both have flooding in their first floor. Theyre both frantic about it and can't hear so much about what they're doing. My sister has kids, so I hope they stay safe. Kinda worried about them.

Idiots idiots idiots.

I got texts from them. Water is at the top step almost at the first floor. They're taking supplies upstairs.

when this event has passed by and they have hopefully survived mostly unscathed (fingers crossed), tell them they are never allowed to do that again, both because of what it puts them through and what it puts the rest of the family through.

I am mentioning this as an aside. I had mentioned the significance of someone having cited infowars.

This should give you an idea as to why it was significant:

Why would Obama try to disrupt an election he's winning

He is? By almost every reasonable account it's an extremely close race.

By every account you're likely to get from news sources more interested in a horse race than a clear steady Obama path to victory, sure. It's better news.

But I trust Nate Silver more than just about any pundit out there, and "extremely close race" isn't close to how he'd categorize the race.

Also, you know, consider the electoral college and basic swing state polls. Obama has PA locked up, and has been ahead in Ohio consistently for...well, forever. Things tightened after the debate a bit, but Romney was never really ahead except for a brief high water mark, then the polls receded.

Really? People have died, houses are destroyed, and we're worried about the election, still? I came here to see how fellow Hatrackers were doing (Yes, I know, I lurk almost completely), and I get conspiracies and politics.

Rival started this thread who lives in New Jersey, and we haven't mentioned it.

To be fair, the election is an enormous deal, and it's not going to be possible to avoid Obama's response to this disaster and Romney's response to whatever Obama is doing. So politicization is inevitable.

But I do agree we should keep this thread focused on the hurricane and the victims, instead of whether or not Obama has access to a weather dominator device.

I'm saying this as BB not as JB.

No power at my house. Lost it at around 7:30 last night. Staying warm at a friend's house right now. Hoping my school system is closed tomorrow so I don't have to stress about getting to work. But it is better for my student to be in school, mixed emotions there.

My brother had sewage coming out of toilets and bathtubs, and his basement flooded, but he has pumps working on generators (he had a lot of flooding previously).

My father had no flooding, made his way to my brother and his family to help him out.

My sister and her family - no one has reached them, and their block is a river, no one is able to get to them. My brother and father are looking for a boat or a raft to try and get to them. I think they should stay put.

All of them - have no power.

We, in Queens, weathered the storm without incident. My wife and I drove around this morning and saw lots of fallen trees, but not much damage beyond that.

The personal is the political, the political is the personal. Regardless i sort of just intended that as apolitical because i don't see conspiracy theorymongering about weather and earthquake control machines to be anything more than a ridiculous sideshow.

Armoth, I hope that your sister and her family are safe, and that the rest of your family either thinks better of going after her, or fails to find a boat or raft.

I wasn't aware that you were married, by the way. Is that a recent development, or have I just been oblivious?

We just heard from a private ambulance company in the area (Hatzolah) that she had contacted them (they conduct rescues too). She told them that she and her family are safe, and are staying put.

If the water recedes then it should be no problem. It only starts to be a problem if her street is still inaccessible tomorrow, and the next day. I don't know how much food/water they have for 6 people...

The wife is new [Smile] - I just got married 2.5 months ago.

That's good news about your sister. At the most they may end up hungry and dehydrated. And honestly, if that's all it amounts to and it makes them reconsider ignoring evacuation orders in the future, it will have been worth it, I think. Do let us know how it goes with them.

Congratulations on your marriage!

How un-ambitious of them. If I were staying in a flooded, storm-stricken area it would be so I could join the looters. It is surely unlikely that your family has the very best flatscreen TV/car/everything else in their neighbourhood; they may have the finest thing in one or two categories, but all of them? Even things that are hard to effectively steal can be subjected to plausible-looking storm damage; status, after all, is zero-sum.

Then again, we're only getting the official story, filtered through at least one level with a possible interest in covering up shenanigans. Fear of the looters, indeed. [Monkeys]

Not to mention, isn't Obama LEADING in the Northeast? If he wanted to "steer" a storm, wouldn't he make it hit a RED state? [Wink]

Sorry about not responding quicker. We lucked out, only lost power for a little over a day. My parents house got bombed. The bottom floor of their bi-level had 2 feet of flooding. A storm surge must have hit, they had no warning that it was coming. Been busy trying to gut the house and prevent mold and such. My mom was in tears because they just found out from insurance that only structural damage is covered, not contents. Half of their house was on that first floor. This will be a long process, as I am sure it will be for thousands others.

RotR, have your parents looked into whether they might qualify for FEMA help?

Glad to hear no one in your family was hurt. Good luck with the flood damage.
