So I've been hearing and reading a lot of good things about Bioshock:Infinite, and I think I want to play it. However, I haven't played the first two. Can anyone suggest whether I should play them? Or is there story there that I need to be familiar with?

Infinite stands alone just fine. I recommend playing both of the other games, but just because they are great games, not because you'll be confused on any plot points..

You're right, the first one is great for that. Much of it, to be fair, is likely because of the style of enemies. Gradually, genetically mutilated and empowered pheromone-controlled addicts are a scarier proposition than empowered, angry dubiously sane xenophobic racists.
Since the first one came with my copy of Infinite, I decided to give it a whirl and see how it holds up. It's been long enough that it's like a great old movie you haven't seen in years.
Having played the two in succession (reverse, in a sense, heh) I can uncomfortably say that the first one is definitely quite a bit scarier than Infinite. I usually have a pretty good memory, even after years, of where the 'gotcha!' moments are and some of them still get me.

Infinite is remarkable. I loved every minute of it and I was really sad when it was over. Luckily, there are three story-drive DLC packs coming. I hope they're as good as the main game.
Because I enjoyed this one so much, I'm replaying the first again. I also never played Bioshock 2, so I went out and bought it. Here's hoping it's as good as the others.
