I imagine if you knew you were fully responsible for the bill (and are used to having insurance), you'd be a lot more careful about getting every bit of value that you could out of the visit. You'd also be a lot less likely to schedule a visit unless you really needed it.

Which is a bad thing. Regular doctor's visits and overall health are highly correlated, or at least that's my understanding.

Perhaps this gives some sense of what things actually might cost without the price fixing, but just to be clear, it's not an answer. It's still prohibitively expensive for many people.
