Just won best actor. Went from hunky hollywood type who could cry on command, to kind of irrelevant to...what just happened?

Apparently he kind of quit acting for a while because of some of the above and decided to reboot his life and career.

I never paid much attention to him one way or the other until I started watching True Detective recently and just..wow he is jaw-droppingly good. Of course helps that the story and writing are incredible, but if you thought you knew what this guy was about, I encourage you to check out True Detective. Or Mud, or Dallas Buyer's Club. If you've never even seen him, do the same.

Anyway, a well deserved Oscar for a guy who decided to re-write what he was all about.

I guess it's a fair piece of proof that practice can lead you somewhere good.

He was not exceptional, in many, many, films. But that's changed recently, and I can only applaud the effort.

He was just fine in A Time To Kill, but yeah his career trajectory has genuinely impressed me. I liked his story about being his own hero but 10 years from now.

I imagine acting to simultaneously be the easiest and most difficult thing to do. I also suspect that the better actors have a bit of a screw loose. How else could someone so convincingly convey that kind of false authenticity?

I suppose the 10,000 hour rule as well as some serious reflection got MM from point A to point B.

edit: point A being "Sahara", "Fools Gold", or a host of other stinkers he led.

Yeah I thought his acceptance speech was fun and insightful. He definitely planned it out.

I think a big part of McConaughey's recent success is that he has finally figured out the roles he does best with. He's not a romantic lead and he's not an action hero. He does better with slightly seedy, slightly sleazy anti-hero like roles. And he's great in them going all the way back to the bit part he had in Dazed & Confused.

It's the first thing I ever saw him in (which he starred in with fellow Academy Award nominee Sandra Bullock).

And I thought he knocked it out of the park. I feel like he dropped off the radar a bit and it's been awhile since he's come back to doing movies like that.

So, true story: An attorney in our office is the cousin (I believe) of the director of Lincoln Lawyer. He's got this whole display for it in his office complete with a picture of him, the director, and some other folks at the premier.

Six degrees of Kevin Bacon...

I have always thought he was good. Yes he's chosen some stinker roles in the past but he always did about as good a job as could be done with them.

I still love Sahara and I don't give a damn what anyone else thinks about it. It was a fun film.

Lincoln Lawyer was a good flick.

True Detective is freaking brilliant.

I haven't seen Dallas Buyers Club yet but will soon.

I liked him in a lot of his old movies. Contact, U-571, and The Newton Boys were all pretty good. Frailty was fantastic. And I even liked Reign of Fire.

I'm a bit surprised that he has suddenly become popular, actually.

Don't forget Bernie, that movie with Jack Black in it, too
