So, what's the hardest boss you've ever been up against?

I have a few contenders. Assume all links have spoilers.

Yunalesca from Final Fantasy X. Yeah, a lot of people think she's a pushover, but I really struggled with her, until I learned the various status tricks needed to stay alive.

Kurt Zisa from Kingdom Hearts 2. Not so much difficult, as really, really annoying. I hate his attacks so, so much. Bleh.

Ultimate Weapon from any Final Fantasy game, though he's not too bad in FF8 if you get lucky with the limit breaks. edit: Can't forget Omega Weapon, too.

Sephiroth in both Kingdom Hearts 1 and Kingdom Hearts 2. I gave up on both. I think I'm not twitchy enough for the battle. I do intend to try again, though I suspect it will take many, many tries to beat him.

Kakistos in Buffy: Chaos Bleeds. I've lost track of the number of times I've tried to beat him. I just can't seem to dodge his attacks, and i run out of med kits. Grrr.

Not really a boss, but Star 7 on Katamari Damacy has always given me fits. I envy people who can do speed runs.

The first boss in the first leviathan seed in Metroid Prime 3. It should have been easy, but I found that to be the hardest boss in the whole game.

I can't beat Ultimecia in FF8. I can't even get past the 3rd part of the fight (when she junctions herself to Griever, or whatever it's called), and I know she still has one more form after that!

I think I rushed through the game, and my party isn't adequately prepared for the final battle.

The Naughty Sorcerous in Kingdom of Loathing. It depends on what class I'm playing. My last time, as a pastamancer, sucked. When I played as a Turtle Tamer, with the ability to use the combination of head butt, knee butt and shield butt, rocked.

Fighting her as a pastamancer was very annoying. She is virtually immune to magic so you can't beat here doing what you do as your class. I eventually just got my moxie up and used a ranged weapon to take her down.

The giant Summon form of Angeal in Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core, at the end of the game. Oh my god, it was literally a half hour fight and by the end of it, my slot machine reels were just dry. They didn't want to give me anything, so I had trouble keeping up my health and magic >_<

Having Phoenix really helps. So does Aura and Holy War. But my favorite strategy for Ultimecia is to load three characters up with all sorts of Junctions, and let the other three have nothing. Let her kill off the nothing characters. The rest of your characters should be strong enough to beat her. I believe last time I played only Squall was left standing at the end, but I did manage to beat her.

To tie in with Final Fantasy, Yiazmat from Final Fantasy XII. He had 50 million hp, and it was about a five hour ordeal. Your gambits have to be set up perfectly, and still you have to have constant vigilance, as his physical attacks can cause instant death, his cyclone attack can kill characters (with shell) when he's doubled his level at critical. They put in a damage cap halfway through the fight.

I just beat him last night. Five hour battle. Agh. I guess Ultimate/Omega could compare, but I think the developers deliberately made this dude to be more ridiculous than anything they had ever done.

But I do echo Alma in Ninja Gaiden as being freakin' hard. I mean, bosses in action games are a totally different beast than RPGs.

Five hours, huh? Thanks for the warning--FFXII is on my list to play. I'll have to remember to set apart a large amount of time for it.

The final battle in Kingdom Hearts 2 also takes several hours, and can be incredibly tough. My characters are pretty maxed out, though, so I expect it will be easier this time around, though probably still very long.

Yiazmat is an optional boss, and actually pretty tough to even unlock (you cant just find him) without some kind of guide. He is the secret boss to end all secret bosses.

In KH2 do you mean Sephiroth, or Xemnas?

Sephiroth is an optional boss, and I've heard he's really tough (one guide I just looked at listed him as a difficulty of 11 out of 10). Xemnas is the final boss. The battle is long. The part I remember having the most difficulty with is the thousands of lasers near the end. Also the part where Riku has to rescue Sora, though that wasn't as bad as the dreaded laser attack.

As far as the Pokemon games go, I just got Diamond, and I've been having a LOT of trouble with just about EVERY boss. It seems like you level up really slowly, and type advantages are a MUST, even though there are so many types now you can't get a steady team- you have to raise 10 pokes and hope you've got the right six in your party. Granted, I'm doing this WITHOUT a strategy guide, which would probably help immensely.

I used to have a LOT of trouble with Diablos in FF8. But then I figured out that the earlier you face him(with Selphie), the easier he is.

I gotta tell you though, the toughest guy I've ever fought was this guy at my old TaeKwonDo school. OOF.

Okay, of all the bosses in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, I must say that Duon is the most annoying. Mostly because I usually use Toon Link against bosses and Duon's spin attack keeps his down air attacks from doing huge damage like they do on others like Ridley and Porky, even Tabuu. I've managed to beat him on Intense with a trophy stand and in all that toil I learned that the best characters to fight him are the default ones who face him in Story mode. Fox and Falco can do well with their lasers when facing the sword guy and their deflectors when facing the gun guy, Zelda can do pretty well with Din's fire and her standard special move, and Peach... well, two words: "Ha-CHA!" Pit's not bad either because he's tactically similar to Fox and Falco, with swift air attacks, arrows, and reflector moves.

Yeah, Diablos is awesome after a while, but he really stinks at first until you get his level up. I was so ticked off- back when I was playing 8 on the Playstation(rather than my PS@ that I use now), I got the the VERY end, and then the playstation broke and WIPED my memory card. Oh, I cried.

KH2 Sephy is easier, IMO. Mainly because Sora is built with a bigger variety of moves.

Also, funny story from trying to beat Proud Mode in KH2: I kept getting to that part with the lasers, and I couldn't do it, until I realized that the game wanted you to pound both triangle and square because you were blocking for Riku and Sora. In Normal mode you could actually get by just pressing square.

I never did manage to beat Kefka from FFVI.

Also, the boss at the end of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga was surprisingly difficult. You started the battle off with 1 hp, and got attacked about twenty times, that you had to use time-based dodges to avoid. It was really hard just to get past the first ten seconds of that battle.

The Omega Pirate from Metroid Prime 1 was pretty difficult, although I honestly had more trouble with Thardus, when I was newer to the controls.

That's what I can think of right now, excluding all of those old school insanely difficult bosses.

What I loved about 9 was how the game really only needed you to hit the thing about 6-8 times, but it was so balanced that one wrong move on your part meant death. I got incredibly lucky and got revived by the Phoenix summon...twice in a row. Phoenix causes damage as well, so there you go. Luckiest boss win ever.

The boss at the end of chrono trigger killed me to many times to count.

Metal slug 3's ending was horridly tough.

ALl mega man bosses if you don't know the correct order.

The metal gear solid boss, like phyco or something that switches controllers and stuff took me forever to beat, i thought i broke my playstation when i was younger and cryed.

Culex from super mario RPG.

And for old times sake, Donkey kong from the original mario.

I remember having a particular hard time when facing the Tarantula from Lufia (SNES) for the first time... It took me at least 6 tries to defeat that one.

Another boss that was tougher than expected was the King Dedede / Starwand combination at the end of Kirby's Adventure (NES)

More recently I can't recall having overly much trouble defeating any bosses, but then again I've never played any of the FF series or such, which are notable for the challenging boss fights.

Most of the Mortal Kombat games have killer bosses. They have moves that take like a third of your life bar, but your attacks do reduced damage on them! Also, the secret fighters are practically impossible! Try fighting Smoke or Jade in MK2. They move super fast (you go for a flying kick and they're in the air kicking you back down almost before you've left the ground) and have projectile immunity.

has anyone ever come up with a harder series of bosses than the final fantasy superbosses?

Like, penance, which you have to defeat other superbosses to get to, takes possibly hours to defeat, and requires such insane grinding to even compete for?

The last two in Zelda II were pretty annoying. Beat one boss? Now here's another. At least once you kill the first guy, you don't have to kill him again unless you die. I will cop to not being able to beat shadow Link until I read about the "hide in the left corner" trick on the internet. Which was nice though, because 17 years later, I finally beat the darn game!

For the longest time, I never could figure out how to beat the Hive Queen in Ender's Game: The Video Game. Then, finally, I realized I had to go back to Battle School, read the entire library, then go back to Command School and sleep enough times to hallucinate that I was being vivisected by buggers.

Then I was finally able to run a kamikaze mission to take down the Queen, but what's with that ending?? You find another Queen, and she tells you that you have 3 options: 1) Valentine becomes the new Hive Queen, 2) All Formics are destroyed, but so is all the space technology of Earth, or 3) That Formics are destroyed, but all Humans become Pequeninos.

Oh, wait, what's that you say? There's no Ender's Game Video Game? Well, dang. I must have been playing Mass Effect 3 after watching the movie and gotten my lines crossed in a dream, then. ;-)
