Why are there so many people who are literate enough to spell 'queue' but not literate enough to know the difference between 'queue' and 'cue'?

I've written the wrong one down while consciously knowing which one I meant because the act of typing is a somewhat passive activity. You think words, and your fingers try to follow.

Oh, I just learned a new word. Seriously. I've know queue since primary school, seen "cue" a couple of times but now I've reached 2nd level- active knowledge of the word.
As non-native, you know that I can tell you how I learned almost every word? Most of them are from computer games. Like (please forgive me, I'm bored out of my mind, summer, can't get anything done around this office):
depot, factory, - Red Alert. Fiancé, negligee - Monkey Island (the insult game written by OSC btw), additional - StarCraft ("You must construct additional pylons!") timber, lumber - WarCraft obviously all the military stuff from Civ.
And books, too. Malleable, Ender's Game, first page Flabbergasted, vigilance, cheesy (sic!) - Harry Potter, part 4 Loitering - every Lee Child's novel to err - LoTR.
pre-School: Ornemental box - I was like five. I couldn't say I'm hungry, but thanks to miss Isabella, I knew ornemental box. primary school: apt to, put up with - I had to memorize a bunch of quotes by Erasm of Rotterdam for a "European Picnic" junior high: lackadaisical, ambidextrous - teacher liked these kinds of words high: Go off, knock up, kick around - same teacher. Phrasal verbs for three years.
American people: biased, biased, biased - it's impossible to have a conversation longer than 3 minutes and not have this word come up. Biased. Biased. trippin' - same. I think I had bad company. sweet, neat, straight - the "straight" that has nothing to do with sexuality
songs: Submarine - guess which The beatles song foe - Lady in black chamber - Hotel California
It is fun. It is boring you right now, but it is fun. It makes you remember the situations very vividly. I can see them before my eyes. Have a nice day.
And, a mediocre trailer by the way, I love the Pippin song, though.

Yeah, actually our teacher played this song for us. All the classics, actually. And "Within temptation" all the time, he loved them.

Very cool that you know where you learned those words from. Thanks for sharing that list. I wish I could remember where I picked up words I often use, but for most words that's in the very distant past for me. I love stumbling across a new word or new usage and rolling it around in my mouth. Where I work, we do enough brainstorming for product names, taglines, and titles that I actively collect words and phrases I find interesting.

I speak French. It's definitely easier to come across words I haven't heard before in that language. I'm not quite sure what you mean by difficult, though.

Yup.
Because they've been getting steadily worse.
Though I think Hobbit II was a big improvement over the lackluster Hobbit I.
This will just be a big battle orgy, which I think we learned from the first movie can be a mistake if not broken up by some storytelling. We'll see if he remembers the lesson of that movie for this one.

It amazes me just how much the Peter Jackson additions to LOTR have soured the movie so much in my mind. Whereas at first I loved them completely. Now I love the stuff that isn't additions, and loath the stuff that is.

I'm of the direct opposite opinion. I've really enjoyed the Hobbit movies so far, and really had to struggle to enjoy the LOTR movies the way I wanted to. But I'm with BB on this--my main beef with the LOTR movies was the somewhat gratuitous Peter Jackson changes. With the Hobbit, I don't know the story quite as inside and out, so I'm blissfully ignorant of most of whatever changes he's making and able to just enjoy the movies for what they are.

I always liked the Hobbit book more than LOTR books, and while I enjoy the movies, Jackson seems to be trying to Lucas himself really hard. I hope the last installment is less Bombar the bouncing bloody barrel basher and more glorious visuals straight from the book.

I think you'll be pleased, if those are your standards for success.
There's a lot of excellent stuff pulled right from the book.
Lee Pace, in my opinion, steals the movie in many ways. Of all the characters cast in the movie, he's more spot on than I possibly could have imagined.
