Here.

These pics pretty much wipe away the EU. It's The First Order vs The Resistance. Strange.

These trailers are playing me like a fiddle, I must admit.

Pretty much.

I had good times with the EU from ages 9 to 15 or so. I'm not mad it's no longer canon. They did a great job putting together a coherent story, but it's all fanfic. Actually this movie is fanfic too, but I'm actually excited about it.

Hm. I would say that officially commissioned licensed works in a collaborative universe are not, by definition, "fanfic."

Great trailer. The Star Destroyer and X-Wing clips are great. I think thats Oscar Isaac in the X-Wing. Glad he's having a good time.

I think they need to show us at least one shot of Finn where he isn't breathing heavily.

Odds of the new Dark sider killing Luke near the end of the movie? Perhaps Han, instead.

True. And the EU authors had to operate in the same universe, and deal with the other author's plotlines.

But they operated under the exact same constraints, and in the end, their stories were not adopted by the the franchise that licensed them, with the exception of "Coruscant", and some EU specific merchandise lines.

It also starred several Gary Stus and Mary Sues. Remember that time where they just straight out had Zahn and Stackpole pose as their own characters for an EU card thingy?

Arguably, every TV series with multiple writers is doing the exact same thing.

How exactly does that series of pictures wipe away the EU? I'm not familiar with the First Order.

I'm coming around to the idea that I'm going to have to compartmentalize some of this. I really don't have a problem dumping most of the EU except for the X-Wing Series and the Thrawn Trilogy. Those are the only ones I really reread still, and the only ones I have serious emotional attachment to. Depending on what they do with these movies, I could still pretend that all those things still exist and that this is just much later in the timeline where, thankfully, the Yuuzhan Vong don't exist.

But if there ends up being a major conflict, I don't know what I'll do. I can't make peace with jettisoning the material I grew up with. But the new movies probably stand to be pretty amazing, so it's not like I'll boycott them.

It's just going to be...weird. Weird because, to me, everything I've read so far is just how Star Wars IS. It's what happened. It's the Truth. And now something else is coming along and it's a whole new Truth. It's impossible to wave a hand in my brain and magically wipe all that old Truth away.

Do you wish you could just wish away your feelings?

It probably helps that my interest in the EU had waned by the time this all happened. So the fact that the stories are not continued doesn't really impact me.

I don't have much problem compartmentalizing away the two versions, no more so than, say the idea of MCU vs Marvel comics. With that said, though, unless they do a great job with the sequels, the "Legends" EU will always be the "real" version to me.

I am individually pleased that the EU is essentially discarded, now to forever exist in a realm of conceptual VHS-punk "what the star wars universe would have become if maintained by juvenile 1980's novelization and comic book wankery until every single character in the book has had their continuity saturated well beyond any conceivably sane limits, palpatine didn't die, mary sues drive sun crushers.."

Presumably, there is no New Republic. That's been a cornerstone of the EU since the Thrawn trilogy.

I see what you're saying.

Yeah, maybe it does mean no New Republic. That wouldn't necessarily bother me, since I can imagine all the characters and most of the events I still want to exist CAN exist even without the New Republic being there...though I'd find it a little hard to believe from a storytelling angle.

At that point, they've blown up death stars, overthrown the Emperor, destroyed chunks of the Imperial fleet of star destroyers, taken out at least two super star destroyers and who knows what else in the decades since ANH...and for all that, they never declared a government of some sort? (or if they did, they called it the Resistance?)

I just find that awfully hard to believe, especially if Leia, as a former senator herself, is actually running the show.

Return of the Jedi was in 1983, so if they're working with a similar amount of in-universe time, 32 years, that's plenty of time for them to declare a government, screw it up, collapse and become a resistance again.

Disney clearly stated that they would not respect the EU content or storylines, whatsoever, in the new films. Smart choice, in my opinion.

It's probably a government, but they're probably locked in war with large parts of the galaxy which are imperial loyalists.

*Nod*

Not to mention resisting an occupation is completely different from occupying a galaxy. The New Republic might just be terrible at administration and conducting invasions.
