In which we advise Trumplike candidates of the future on how to gain and retain the spotlight, perhaps even winning the nomination. Who to rattle a saber at, which groups to denigrate. I'll start us off.

1. Expose dental hygienists as a bunch of con artists. Everyone hates going to the dentist, but they are seen as sometimes necessary...hygienists, on the other hand...they have no place in a free and great America! The political base will eat this up. (And then neither brush nor floss).

call mexicans rapists, say you're gonna build a big wall and exile muslim immigrants on the basis of their religion, and continue to dominate the republican primary for virtue of saying things like this

He said he wanted a temporary ban on Muslim immigrants, not, AFAIK, to exile Muslims that are here.

There's a pretty decent AP article that covers what he said, when, and what his spokespeople have said in response to direct questions. When asked to which groups the ban would apply, the first answer was "everybody". It was quickly modified to allow that legal US residents and military personnel could come and go, but also that he wants every Muslim checked and scrutinized.

Here's the article.

My honest opinion is that he didn't think it through before speaking and then had to clarify that people who actually are US citizens and active duty US military probably shouldn't be banned from entering the country should they ever leave.

Ah. I guess I never really pay too close attention to the specifics of his proposed plans and subsequent clarifications. I don't really see the point. The only point would be if I were on a crusade to turn Trump supporters and fight the good fight but I don't have the necessary high tolerance for pain that engaging those supporters requires. I stick to the people who say "Well, I know he's crazy/racist/whatever, but at least he's not so politically correct/tells it like it is/opens up debate."

There are quite a few of that type out there, I think. A recent comparison showed that his support is even higher when people can answer surveys without interacting with another human. He gets 3x the differential of other candidates examined. The idea is that his supporters know he's saying toxic things they would be reluctant to agree with in public, but underneath it all they secretly feel the same way. Not really scientific, but the parallel is to polling about whether one masturbates or uses illegal drugs...not having a human poll-taker raises the proportion of positive responses several percentage points.

Here's a link. It's pretty interesting stuff, though not really conclusive:

Future Trumpeter: I should be President because I'm smarter than all the other countries' leaders, and they know it. M also tougher, and that's what America needs, smarter tougher leaders. Good looking too. In fact, my cabinet will be composed entirely of good looking people with street smarts. And weapons.

Taxes will be eliminated and replaced with a national lottery system, and state run casinos.
