People were discussing the perennial popular-horrible-timely versus good-critically-acclaimed-nobody-likes-it that all awards face. You know the drill, nobody likes half the movies that win Oscars, everyone was seeing the latest Marvel movie, but it wasn't that good. And years later, no one thinks that Marvel movie was that great anyway. But people still talk about media from years past, and others land in the cultural cannon.
As a solution, why not have awards for the best books/movies/music of the year, half a decade ago? Most of the books are still recent that people remember them, but old enough that the hype has worn off and we can make a clear decisions about what was good.
So I nominate the year 2010 as our year. What was the best in 2010?

Looking at the list of 2010 releases, I have to say that it was pretty far from being the best year when it comes to movies.
The big standout for me is How to Train Your Dragon, which I thought was an absolutely charming film. Not only that, but it had one of my favorite scores in the past decade. A delightful movie all around.
Toy Story 3 was also an unexpectedly good film, and a solid end to a landmark series.
I know that the Social Network gets a lot of praise, but I was pretty underwhelmed by it. The rest of the year... maybe I'm forgetting something, but nothing else comes to mind.

Well I just ran through a list of films from 2010 and while there were several I enjoyed at the time, there are only two that I would be excited about seeing on my TV menu. Oddly enough, both are Korean. I Saw the Devil and A Man From Nowhere. So I would have to go with I Saw the Devil as best film.
Music I would probably have to go with The Black Keys.
Novels, The Way of Kings hands down.

I don't really read much anymore, so it's hard to throw books out there.
Movies? Live Action: - I really enjoyed Inception (though it did add the "bwhaaaaa" sound to the movie soundtrack lexicon, which has been featured in basically every trailer since). - Red was hilarious, and I watch it every time it's on. - The King's Speech had some excellent performances throughout, and I really enjoyed it. - The A-Team is a total guilty pleasure. Lots of fun and totally able to watch it again and again.
Animated: - How to Train Your Dragon was unexpectedly good, and very enjoyable. Very rewatchable. - Toy Story 3 was surprisingly sad at the end, and downright terrifying for kids watching the climax, I'm sure. Pixar went a bit dark. - Tangled was pretty decent for a Disney princess film, overall, and I think hangs well with the rest.
As for music, it's not something I get into that deeply... though I'd put Pentatonix on the 2011 list.

I didn't realize that was 2010, but yeah, it's my answer as well.
Never read that one. Hmmm.
As for books in 2010, if you google "books in 2010" a bunch of pictures show up (which I wasn't expecting, yay google).
It turns out it was a great years for nonfictions. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, Emperor of All Maladies, and the Warmth of Other Suns came out that year and I still am really found of all of those. I don't know which one is best, but I think the Henrietta Lacks book had the most impact. I never read Just Kids or Unbroken. Other ones I read and liked well enough were The Disappearing Spoon (the Periodic Table book) and At Home by Bill Bryson.
As for fiction, Mockingjay, A Visit From the Goon Squad, Room (knew about this one independent of the 2015 movie), Major Pettigrew's Last Stand, Freedom, The Finkler Question and Freedom all came out that year, and I've read them. The only one of those I really enjoyed was Major Pettigrew, which was a cute old people romance against the backdrop of prejudiced young family. I got bogged down in half the basic plot of Mockingjay, so I didn't enjoy it. I never read and of the Lisbeth Salander books, though the last one also came out in 2010.
Since this is a Science Fiction Board, I should check into SF. On Goodread's best list, I only read Cryoburn and Feed. Neither blew me away really.
I'll have to think more about the other categories, but wow, 2010 was a really really good year for non-fiction.

I third Way of Kings. I haven't even looked at what other books came out that year.
Best Movie: Inception. It's an uncreative pick, but even without the (maybe overblown) hype it came out with, it's still my favorite on the list imdb showed me.
I'm surprised no one has nominated The Last Airbender yet.
