It seems like a particularly useless polite fiction. The Ottomans certainly knew who was actually in charge in Egypt; so did the Egyptians; so did the other European powers. What would have gone differently in the alternate world where the British just straightforwardly proclaimed that Egypt was now a British vassal? Or even better, simply annexed the place?

It would've probably jeopardized British interests in Afghanistan.
