Well close enough anyways. I wanted to get this out prior to going on vacation.

My life has been a good one. I was born in Portland OR. My father at the time was in the army, so we moved around. Except for a year and a half in El Paso we lived on the west coast. I am second of seven children.

When my father retired from the army we moved back to Portland. I was eight. He started his private practice, and being only one in a small handful of Gastroenterologist at the time he was very busy. Many times if we wanted to spend time with our dad it meant going with him to the emergency room and waiting in the waiting room while he pulled something out of someone’s stomach. The good thing was it always meant ice-cream.

I was a very accident prone child. I have more scars on my head than most two people have one their whole body. I have broken my arm and my ankle. I usually will have my teeth drilled on with no pain killers. To sum it up I have a very high pain tolerance.

One time I was building a desk for my daughter, when I shot a small nail through my thumb. The nail traveled through the pad of my thumb and out the middle of the nail. I was on the phone with work at the time. I just reached over and pulled the nail out of my thumb and continued with the work.

When I was five I taught myself to ride a bike. My father, being the overtly cautious man that he is, would not teach us till we were eight. So I borrowed a bike from a friend, found the biggest hill, which in San Francisco was not very difficult. I would jump on the bike and head down the hill till I fell over. I did this over and over again till I made it to the bottom of the hill. I remember the first time I got to the bottom I tried to turn. I turned and put the front tire into a rain grate. I remember the flying over the front handle and landing on my head. Frustrated I grabbed the bike and head for the top of the hill again. By the end of the day I could ride a bike. Never had training wheel, I am not a patient person. My father was very impressed, when he returned. I got my reasoning from my father.

My mother has always been the disciplinarian. One time she came home to a messy house, which was our job to keep clean, and found all of us watching TV. She got so made that se grabbed a pair of scissor and cut the TV cord. Fortunately for her, she unplugged the set prior to cutting the cord. I got my anger and tenacity from her.

I served an LDS mission in Salvador, Brasil. I had the time of my life and was shot at twice. It was great. I saw more dead bodies, and rivers full of raw sewage than I could have ever imagined. I was sick most of the time and lost forty pounds, which took me at 6’2” to 125 lbs. My face broke out and left my previous unmarked face pocked and pitted. The day before I returned to my parents I got the worst haircut ever in my life. When my mom saw me she didn’t know whether to cry out of happiness or pity. But I would not have changed or given up those two years of my life for anything.

My wife met me a month late and we were married five month after that. As most of you know I love my wife very much. She has to put up with a lot from me. We have three wonderful children.

My hope is that my wife and I can do half as good a job as my parents have done with me.

I'm going to be good and refrain from making comments about how many times you landed on your head.

Scott, you are a definite contribution to Hatrack. You've got a great sense of humor, and I think it's always a good thing to see good, faithful dads. It's a good example to people like me who will be starting that journey in the next couple years or so.

Keep up the good work, and have fun at Lake Powell.

[Eek!] And here I screamed like a little girl the time I accidentally stapled my finger.

Gosh, I don't know the right way to congratulate you on your first landmark. It came with astonishing speed. But you've definitely worked your way in; I read all of your posts, even though so many of them are making fun of me.

Well, anyway, congrats! Keep up the good work!

Congratulations, Head Ditch Digger!

Ok, I've had some major dental work done, and have given birth three times, but when I saw this
quote:
The nail traveled through the pad of my thumb and out the middle of the nail.
I just gibbered a bit. [Eek!] Yowza!

To many 1000s more! [Big Grin]

Speaking as someone with very low pain tolerance, I can only say "ouch." [Angst]

eslaine-if it was closer I would have tried.

Jon Boy-Don't refrain, it has become the family joke.

Saxon-when you make comments like "I screamed like a little girl," it is hard not to make fun of you.

Kat-Very scary, isn't it?

Rivka-I have had two kidney stones, the only pain that drops me to my knees.

Twinky-Well that's why you Canadians have Socialized Medicene, no pain tolerences, unless there is a sheet of ice around.

Sopwith-enough said.

PTB [Party]

Dan- it made the decision easier, whether to do one or not.

Tick- [Blushing]

Sounds to me like you'd be an excellent candidate to be the first male to attempt pregnancy and delivery, ala the movie "Junior". No epidural for you!

Congratulations on making your first thousand at such breakneck speed! [The Wave]

'Specially since I've been here longer than you! [Mad]

HDD,

Cool thread. Your childhood injuries made me reminisce about mine as well. I too have suffered through kidney stones (6 in all) and sympathize with you completely.

I, however, have never sent a nail through my thumb! But maybe that's because I make the OTHER guy hold the nail...
