I'm an impatient reader. It's hard for me to start reading something that looks daunting. If I find out I like it, I have no problem forsaking daily life until it's done, but there's nothing worse than seeing a page full of words and knowing you have to read them.

That said, I decided to do my landmark 5,000th post in a visual format, creating a flash video out of photos that I feel capture the feel of the past 2 years of my life. I thought I'd let you look at the pictures (which I've labeled with captions purely for identification purposes) and ask questions about them. That way, I can ramble about my life only as inspired by the pictures and the questions and keep everyone involved more entertained.

I apologize for the quirkiness of the flash movie. If you watch it too many times the music loops back on itself. If it's too unbearable, let me know and I'll try my darndest with my non-programming brain to make it work. You can find the monstrous file that may or may not load properly here.

Ask questions, and I shall babble for you. [Smile]

That guy in the store was right, Annie. You're definately a WOW! girl. In many, many aspects.

You're one of the many incredibly talented, fun, special people who make Hatrack the wonderful haven that is is. We're all so lucky to have you here.

'sides...who else would have tamed the Tiger?

[Wink]

-Dave

PS - as a young boy, I had a Raggedy Andy doll I loved and cherished. Yep. A boy. With a doll. And he unabashedly loved 'im.

QUESTION: So tell us about the Pious kitten...

That was great! I wish I had the knowhow to make something like this.

Swedish music? It sounds like a medieval song in a new coat. Who is the performer?

It certainly is a medieval Swedish song in a new coat... it's by Garmarna, one of my favorite obscure bands. They redo medieval tunes, and have a whole album of the work of Hildegard Von Bingen.

The pious kitten is my little cat Aslan. Perhaps I was asking for it by giving him that name, but for some strange reason I always catch him sitting on a box next to a big pile of framed pictures, gazing at the picture of Jesus. He does it at least 3 times a day, that I see. This was one of those occasions when I caught him with my camera.

I'm not sure it is a problem of 10 mgs. For some reason it stops loading at about 40%.

Would love to see it.

Haeli is my little baby sister, who was born when I was seven - several years before my other two little baby sisters. She is, and will always be, better-looking than anyone else in the family. This is OK, however, because she doesn't act like a cute girl and doesn't pander to silly boys. She also plays the guitar and writes songs better than mine, and she's only been doing it for 3 months.

Abby is the Infamous Abby Watson®, my current roommate and very good friend of 4 years. We are a terrible combination - we are both the type of funny girl who always wants to be the center of attention and we stay up way too late planning costumes to shock and amaze our acquaintances at parties. Abby and I rarely talk about serious things, and our particular brand of humor involves being very blunt and mean to one another, something that I find very funny with her but with nobody else. Abby is also related to every person I've ever met. WE like to meet new people and ask them if they know any of Abby's cousins and they always do. Abby registered a username at Hatrack – Gail – to spy on and make fun of me and she'll occasionally log on to see what I'm up to, but I still haven't convinced her that yes, she too is nerdy enough to have a fabulous time here. In fact, I'd like to open up an invitation for anyone and everyone to write Abby an email telling her a funny joke because it's just the kind of thing that would make her laugh. Her address is abswatson [at] excite [dot] com.

CT wanted to know about the Mission Mountains, and my story starts in 1842.

1842 was the year that Jesuit priest Pierre Jean DeSmet founded St. Mary's Mission in what is now Stevensville, Montana, my home town. It was founded as a mission to the Salish indians - a peaceful tribe who had saved Lewis & Clarks' lives and lived amiably with their neighbors the Shoshone. Unlike the Blackfeet and Crow of Montana, the Salish were peaceful and lived well with white settlers. The early fledgling towns of Stevensville, Victor and Hamilton were founded on the concept that whites and indians could share a community. The deeply religious Catholic Salish were actually a civilizing influence on the wild mountain men who settled at the few white outposts in the area. In the 1870s, the United States forced the Salish to relocate to Jocko, an area 70 miles north and outside of their traditional territory. Chief Charlot was the last of the Salish chiefs to leave the Bitterroot Valley and sadly resigned himself to settle in Jocko in 1891.

The Mission Mountains overlook the valley where the Salish settled with their confederated tribes, the Kootenai, Kalispell and Pend Oreille. Today, the Flathead Reservation is considered one of the prime real estate areas in the state because of its breathtaking views and proximity to the rich man's playland of Flathead Lake. Much tribal land is being bought by wealthy land developers and the population on the reservation is 65% non-indian. The land is both prosperous and poor, flourishing and degenerating. While increased awareness of indian culture is benefiting the whites in the area, the old ways are bieng lost. Today, there are 12 native speakers of the Salish language in the world. I'll never be able to drive through the beautiful Mission Valley without a bit of bittersweet admiration of the history of the land.
