This isn't really the proper forum for this, but since I can't e-mail Mr. Card directly, this will have to do.
Why did you write such a beautiful, horrible story? I had read the short story years ago, and it moved me then, but the novel made Stevie so real to me, that I grieve for him now, for all those children. What was the purpose of breaking my heart like this? I'm almost 40 years old, and I have no children, I've never felt the frustration and fear that a parent lives with every day, I've never known the unconditional love from a child. Your novel, Mr. Card, reached into places in my heart I didn't even know were there, exposed them, filled them, and then shattered them. All of your novels before and since have always lifted me up, opened my mind, showed me that there is indeed beauty and hope in our lives, no matter how lonely or alien we are. Lost Boys is the opposite of all that work. There is a senseless evil at work in our world, and no matter how good we try to be, we are always vulnerable to it. There is no protection, love isn't strong enough, not even God can stop it from happening.

From the evil things people do, there is no protection. But for ourselves and how we treat others and how we deal with such horrible things, there is hope.

Also, imagine if it had been a different kind of family who moved into that house. Would the killer have been stopped? Perhaps that was how God protected, but it came at a price from a family who had taught their son well enough that he was willing to pay the price to make sure no other kid got hurt and that the families who lost their sons were able to have a last sweet goodbye.

I think the purpose of the book is to show the coexistant pain and beauty in what Stevie did. He was willing to sacrifice himself for others, and it's so noble, but it's also so painful. I thought it was a story that is meant to break your heart, but then when you think about it and ponder what Stevie really did for all those people, quelling all of their fears, then it's beautiful.
