So far i've read: Shadow Puppets, Shadow of the Hegemon, Ender's Shadow, Enchantment, Heartfire; Homebody, Treasure Box, Children of the Mind,
Pastwatch, Alvin Journeyman, Earthborn, Earthfall
Ships of Earth, Lost Boys, The Memory of Earth, Xenocide, The Folk on the Fringe, Prentice Alvin,
Treason, Red Prophet, Wyrms, Seventh Son, Speaker for the Dead, Ender's Game, Hart's Hope, and Songmaster. I just recently got Lovelock and Worthing Saga(which i'm reading now). I was wondering if I am considered a OSC fanatic or if i have to read EG about 33 or so more times to be included.

PS- Does anyone know where i can find OSC books cheap b/c after the flood that hit my area i lost every book i had. Good thing i read most of what i had and took the books i just recently bought with me when i was evacuated. [Smile]

Usually you can find lots of OSC paperbacks on ebay for pretty cheap. I don't know what I'd do if I lost my OSC collection, having invested in so many first edition hardbacks and a few new bookshelves to hold them all.

Here is what I've read so far:

Flux
The Changed Man
Cruel Miracles
Monkey Sonatas
Unaccompanied Sonata
Doorways
First Meetings

Masterpieces
Future on Fire
Future on Ice
Empire of Dreams and Miracles

The Memory of Earth
The Call of Earth
The Ships of Earth
Earthfall
Earthborn

Sarah
Rebekah

Saints

Seventh Son
Red Prophet
Prentice Alvin
Alvin Journeyman
Heartfire

Ender's Game
Speaker for the Dead
Xenocide
Children of the Mind
Ender’s Shadow
Shadow of the Hegemon
Shadow Puppets

A Planet Called Treason
Songmaster
Folk of the Fringe

Eye for Eye/The Tunesmith
Lost Boys
Enchantment
Lovelock
Pastwatch: The Redemption

Hey, I've got redundant paperback copies of a lot of titles in my collection that I keep around specifically for the purpose of spreading the OSC bug throughout the world, I'd be happy to mail them along to you to help you out starting a new collection. E-mail me at lacytv@msn.com

You can find most Card books über-cheap on half.com, amazon z shops, abebooks.com, and ebay.

As for what Card books I've read... [Wink]

You could check used book stores. I found a nice copy of Songmaster, and it only cost $2.00. That's $2.00 Canadian, so that's about, what, a dime American? [Razz]

After reading all the books you guys have read by OSC, it makes me feel like just a wannabe. I thought by reading EG 12 times made me a fanatic but I guess not.

So far I have read:

Ender's Game
Speaker for the Dead
Xenocide
Children of the Mind
Ender's Shadow
Shadow of the Hedgemon
Shadow Puppets
Seventh Son
Red Prophet

I guess I will have to read some more to try to be considered a fanatic. [Wink]

Heh, I am sort of a wannabee too. I am pretty sure this is the complete list.

Xenocide
Children of the Mind

Ender's Shadow
Shadow of the Hegemon
Shadow Puppets

Memory of Earth
Call of Earth
Ships of Earth
Earthfall

I think that is it. I suppose I should get going on some more!

Mikal, the screen is based on the name that Bean took in Shadow of the Hegemon as a Thai commander he didn't like the idea of just tiger for a name he wanted something that was fun to right basically in thai it means "Awaiting Cremation" because Achilles pretty much thought that bean was only around b/c he let him and he was just walking around til Achilles got rid of him. I would have to say the most prized book i had that i lost was an autographed first edition printing of Shadow of the Hegemon that i got on ebay. By the way thanks for everyone's suggestions on sites to look for.

Narnia, I haven't read the Homecoming series yet either! I agree in that I have never felt the real desire to...maybe someday. [Dont Know]

To follow Narnia's format *= books I own, and just for fun I listed which ones I have signed [Razz] :

*Ender's Game (signed)
*Speaker for the Dead (signed)
*Xenocide (signed)
*Children of the Mind (signed)
*Ender's Shadow (signed)
*Shadow of the Hegemon (signed)
*Shadow Puppets (signed)
*First Meetings (second edition- four stories)

Seventh Son
Red Prophet

I also own Storyteller in Zion (also signed) and Lovelock (not signed), but I haven't read either of them yet. [Smile] Next on my list!

I'm also thinking of reading Hart's Hope, but I'm hesitant because of the mixed reactions I've heard.

I've only been reading OSC books for a little over a year, and at first I didn't even know I was reading sci-fi (I got Ender's Game in the Young Adult section and Ender's Shadow for my birthday). It was a big shock to realize I liked science fiction. I've only just started to read his other series (Is there a plural of series?) so this is what I've read (and I own all of them.)

Ender's Game
Speaker for the Dead
Xenocide
Children of the Mind
Ender's Shadow
Shadow of the Hegemon
Shadow Puppets
First Meetings (the one with 4 stories)
The Memory of Earth
The Call of Earth

I want to finish the Homecoming series and then I'll see which one is next.

Wow. I'm curious if any of you with large collections of OSC "do" any other authors. I only own 26-27 of OSC's books (all hardback I don't buy paperback) but I also collect 4 other authors - one who writes MORE than OSC and one who is almost as active. I also buy books that aren't of my top 5 authors. I read compulsively.

It is a struggle financially for me to keep up - and thank heaven for eBay. I can't resist buying some books as soon as they hit the bookstore. November will be Crystal City and King's new Gunslinger novel. Those are "musts" the day they hit the bookstore.

I'm just curious if anyone else - especially CalvinMaker - are able to collect more than OSC with that kind of volume. If you do then I am truely amazed and do you have to live in your car to afford them!

I think I'll tack this on here. Does anyone know of a way I can get the short story West by itself. It was one of the most amazing stories I've ever read, but I wasn't that impressed with the rest of Folk of the Fringe and would like to be able to lend West out to people on it's own.

Posted by En Vista (Member # 3848) on :

I collect/obsess over William Gibson too, and Sandra Cisneros (if anybody knows who she is). I can't wait until Chip Kidd writes another, so I can start a real collection. I've been tossing around the idea of tracking down all of his cover art, but that would be insane (he's the guy behind most of Michael Chrichton's cover art ie Jurrasic Park with the solid red lettering and the shadow of the raptor, I'm sure you can all picture it) Anyways, I'm starting to track down the first editions of all the Chuck Palanhuik books too. OSC is about the only sci fi that I ever read, except the Harry Potter books. And I'm not even going to TRY to collect the first edition hardbacks of those. Maybe in a couple of years when I start makeing real money [Wink]

AnonymousNC,

I also have read and had most of Michael Crichton's fiction i read and had copies of Andromeda Strain, sphere, Great Train Robbery, Jurassic Park, Timeline, Disclosure, Congo, Terminal Man, Eaters of the Dead, and Rising Sun. I had a copy of Lost world but hadn't read it and just recently picked up his newest novel Prey(which i plan on reading after Worthing Saga or Lovelock). It's amazing how one author can have all of his fictional works into movies right now Timeline is coming out this fall. It's a shame though that none of the movies actually compare to the books. Well i went back to my rambling again sorry.

The Seventh Son
*The Red Prophet

*=ordering through that ignoramus online community, Amazon, who likes to ship "within 24 hours" orders after 5 days of anxiously waiting at the door for the package to come (that was also a joke, about waiting at the door night and day and all, although it's not too far from the truth... [Big Grin] )

[Hail] (Praise him, the ALMIGHTY ORSON for whom thousands and thousands and billions of fans flock to bookstore after bookstore in hopes of buying -excuse me- being blessed with the opportunity to hold in his/her hand another Book of Orson. That I'm not joking about.

Keep in mind that I was only introduced to OSC ( Almighty Orson ) OK, that's really enough of that, someone's going to start laughing at me, although I have no problem with calling him that name...anywho, I only heard of OSC one month ago when I started to read EG, and in that month I've read all of those books (minus 7th Son and Red Prophet, which I'm getting.)

It's much easier to list series as a whole than individually, that way I can type less and you all know the individual titles anyway.

My List:

Ender Series
Shadow Series
Homecoming Series
Alvin Series

First Meetings
Lovelock
Wyrms
Saints

Worthy to be one of us
(only Calvin mentioned this one) from the book "Turning Hearts: Short stories on family life," which was edited by OSC and David Dollahite (btw-I've read that whole book as well)

And I think that's it for the next few weeks until I read another one. Any suggestions?

CalvinMaker, I am truly impressed.

I've been working on OSC books since law school, about 1986. It's probably easier to list what I haven't read than what I have:

I have NOT Read:
Sarah (yet)
Rebekah (yet)
Hatrack River
First Meetings
Some of the middle books in the Homecoming series (I read the first 2 and the last one)
Lost Boys (not enthusiastic about the horror genre, though I did read Treasure Box)
Ainge
Saintspeak
Capitol
I'm missing some of the short stories and most of the poetry, plays, non-fiction, etc.

That means I HAVE read some of OSC's more obscure books, and thus qualify myself as a true OSC fan. For example:

The Folk of the Fringe
Maps in a Mirror
Hart's Hope (echo the mixed reviews)
Saints
The Worthing Saga/Hot Sleep
Treason
The Abyss

So, is there a place around here where people discuss their favorite OSC books and why? I haven't searched past the first 2 pages here. But any friend of Speaker For the Dead and Pastwatch is a friend of mine. Prentice Alvin is probably my favorite so far of the Alvin Maker series. Enchantment was good, but I have a soft spot in my heart for novelized fairy tales (I also live for Robin McKinley books - she wrote a very good different take on the Sleeping Beauty legend a couple of years ago called Spindle's End, which I'd recommend to any Enchantment fans).

Posted by punwit (Member # 6388) on :

Mockingbird, The horror in Lost Boys is merely a backdrop for a story about family and love. I would HIGHLY recommend this book. This is the first and only novel that brought me to tears.

Posted by UTAH (Member # 5032) on :

I was just going to say "ditto" until I came to Calvin's list. You win! [Hat]
I have a collection of 22 of OSC's books, both paperback and hardback. There are many other books that I borrowed from the library and reluctantly returned.
One more [Hat] to Calvin.
By the way, I also collect many other authors. I have all of Rbt. Jordan, Mary Stewart, Jean Auel, Terry Brooks, Rowling, and many others.

Wow! it's really amazing how many of OSC's books you guys have read- and I thought I was a fan!

I've read:
Ender's Game
Speaker for the Dead
Xenocide
Children of the Mind
Ender's Shadow
Shadow of the Hegemon
Seventh Son
The Red Prophet
Enchantment
Treasure Box

I don't like to stick to one author, however good he may be, mostly because there are so many good books out there I feel like I'm missing out on a heck of a lot if I restrict myself to one person's writings, and I hate that feeling! [Smile]

I just started reading Folk of the Fringe.

I don't want to waste brain cells trying to figure out which OSC books I haven't read, so I'll just pick them off as I find them. I was happy to come across this one.

I read
Wyrms - this I read first, I remembered it well, then it took some time to find book again, and recognize author.
Treason - read recently.
Enders Saga - read some time ago, little bit boring in my opinion.

Enchantment - very good book, good Fantasy level.

Also read reviews and world opinions regularly - generally consider OSC very reasonable person.

In first three books I noticed VERY HIGH level of violence, performed by children in two of these books. It is not so usual in other books I read. I would be interested how Orson Card can explain his position on violence in books here.
Generally I am not too sensitive to violence (or sex) in movies or stories, I liked Kick-Ass movie - but there violence was stylized, shown little bit as non serous, not real. Not so in these stories. So violence of these stories shocked me somewhat. Many critics sharply criticized this movie.

Why is it necessary to have a position on "violence in books?"

Without a good vantage point, you won't be able to see the action properly.

Tom:

It's good to know what you can stomach.

For example, I can't stomach the violence in GRRM's Song of Ice and Fire. It detracts from my general enjoyment of life. So I probably won't be buying the next book, alas. (It was a brilliant story...)

That's not a position so much as a reaction. I know my limits; I know that I feel better when I stay within them.

Ok just one question. Have any of you heard of a thing called a LIBRARY. I love OSC books but I also love any time travel books or other science fiction. I am older than the rest of you by a long ways I think cause I love Heinlein and Asimov too. I also read biographies and autobiographies. You can't own everything that is what the LIBRARY is for. Try it sometime.

I'm not a fan of Asimov's novels, but his short stories are brilliant.

I'm going to call you on this-- I'm 35. I bet you're only a little bit older than me.

I'm curious - what prompted this?

Random stupid trolling, I'd imagine.

Actually, OSC is VERY sensitive to sex or bad words in movies in his reviews. He usually notices them where I would just don't see them (and anyway wouldn't pay attention) - in completely average films.

I wrote this post because level of violence in these books is exceptional - Genocide of few races or being professional killer - and is performed by children. You don't usually see this in other books, at the least I don't see it too often.

I think if you can object to sex in movies you can object to violence in books. I don't consider myself too sensitive.

If OSC erver watched Deadwood, the world would explode.

At the end of the 20th Anniversary Edition of the Ender's Game audiobook by Audio Renaissance there is a long afterward by OSC. The whole afterward is just him talking about the book and his experiences with it over the years. He directly addresses the issue of violence. It is well worth $20 to buy the mp3.

The better question though is, did you find the first two killings by Ender more shocking than the thousands of pilots and billions of aliens that he killed? If so, might than not have been the point? A major theme in the later books was that every single life he took weighed on him equally. Without those deaths, the later soul searching would have lost its depth and, for me, would have lost its impact.

I own about 75% of the books OSC has had published, and if i see one I dont have I tend to buy it.
I had 4500 books last time I counted, on a variety of subjects; a biography of Stalin anyone??

Why is having read Capitol a big plus?? I have two copies I think.

I have stopped lending out my copies of the Short story selection entitled Enders Game; people just will not give them back; lost about 4 so far.
