Hello, I am new here. I am not sure where to put this, so I am putting this here. I doubt that it will have any significant impact, but one can hope, no?

Does anyone here care about what happened after Xenocide? While I like all of Card's books, thus far, (I have read the Homecoming series, and the Ender series save Shadow Puppets) But I was disappointed to find out that the next book was about Bean. This is, however, not to say that I did not like Ender's Shadow. It was a very good book, just that I would, and many others as well, I am sure, like to see a follow up to Xenocide.

If I am missing something, and there has been a direct sequel to Xenocide, please do not hesitate to call he all manner of mean names. After all I'd deserve it.

Yes, there is a book after Xenocide called Children of the Mind. The two kind of go hand in hand, so I can understand why you feel like something's missing from the story. [Smile]

[Wave] Welcome to Hatrack!

Edit: Just for clarification, here is how you would organize the series chronologically-

Ender's Game
Ender's Shadow (basically the same time period as Ender's Game)
Shadow of the Hegemon
Shadow Puppets
Shadow of the Giant (not written yet)
Speaker for the Dead
Xenocide
Children of the Mind

There have also been rumors of a linking book that will connect the Shadow books with the Ender books.

Oh, CRAP! I really goofed. I meant Chlidren of the Mind. That is what I wanted to se a follow up to! I knew that I would makemyself look stupid on my first post. I am horrible. Please reread my first post with "Childern of the Mind" everywhere "Xenocide" is.

Dude, OSC says he does not plan on writting more on the Ender series (ive read this somewhere, i think it is in ask uncle orson). In my oppion, the series ended satifactively, yeah there was a lot of questions, but OSC solved the conflict in CotM and thats that...

I think OSC needs to end the series' he has had for almost twenty years and start a new one. He should be doing more self-contained novels as I lost interest in his books, though not the man, about four years ago.

I cared for Ender, I didn't care for the Universe around him. I never could get into the Alvin Maker series as I am not a big fantasy fan. The Homecomming series was too, well, familiar for my taste.

I can't wait for his book set in a magical Harlem and the second in the series of Time Travel Historians. Alas, he has worked on his series books for several years that I had grown tired of reading.

I've heard this alot, from everyone but OSC himself. I think it's true though.

i was wondering if OSC will write a book after children of the mind. something about what happened to miro and jane and wang mu and peter. i think he left that part slightly unfinished.
oh, by the way does anyone know when is shadow of the giant coming out ? i really cant wait

Although I AM curious to see where Jane and Peter go next, I do believe that the story is at a good ending point and doesn't NEED any more to be complete.

But, that doesn't mean I won't gobble up anymore stories set after Children of the Mind.

I've thought about it some more and I realized something.

I don't think a story about Jane or Peter after Children of the Mind could work.

First off, Jane is just TOO DARN POWERFUL now. She controls FTL travel, she has gained effective immortality, and she knows EVERYTHING ever entered as data on the philotic web. A story about her now would be a story about a god-like figure, no challege.

Second, Peter has Jane's close ear. He has access to almost all her powers (minus the immortality) with only the cost of the little time required to ask and convince her for her help. This also applies to Miro and the other important characters from the Speaker chain.

Now, to say another story set in this universe is impossible is completely wrong. This universe just got A LOT more complicated and interesting.

The trick is: Where's the conflict?

Will Starways Congress sit idly by with Lusitania having SUCCESSFULLY avoided distruction?

Will they BELIEVE their word that the Descolada has been neutralized?

What about the reports of FTL travel? They will WANT this technology. What about the fact that the Piggies and Buggers now have access to this method of travel?

Oh, let's not forget the BUGGERS!!! Humanity might be forgiving, but they could afford to be. The Buggers were thought LONG DEAD. Now they have returned! Will they hold a grudge? Could they see humanity as a threat to be elimanted as varelse? Will they attack humanity again just to prevent themselves from being killed again?

Now, of course, the Buggers have no hatred for humanity. But Starways Congress doesn't know that for sure. They just have a book written thousands of years ago by some unknown author.

What I presented here was just ONE source of possible conflict in the Enderverse after Children of the Mind. In such a complex world, interesting characters are sure to surface. The true question is, does Mr. Card feel he has any characters that fit in such a world and are important enough that their stories MUST be told. If he does, I'm SURE he'll find a way of sticking them in and crafting another masterful tale. If not, no big deal. We've gotten our wonderful tales.

The main point: I feel that Mr. Card CAN'T tell anymore tales of the characters from Speaker for the Dead through Children of the Mind. Their story is complete. From here on out, there are no more challenges we feel they MIGHT fail. We know now that NOTHING is impossible to them (or we at least FEEL that way).

Again, I would LOVE more stories set after Children of the Mind, but such stories would HAVE to be about NEW characters whose voices DEMAND to be heard in this new chaos.

Just my $.02

yes well if you put it that way...
allthough i still would want there to be another book about the same characters(more or less) as the last books i dont think it will happen.
first of all it would be like writing a sequal to a book that ended in "and they lived happily ever after" . the storys of miroand jane seem quite finished (not that they wont lead an interesting life but nothing as intense as their last "adventure" seems likely to happen to them.
peter and wang mus story does need a bit more telling though. it almost looks as if osc left a way to continue the serise by bringing in semi new characters in children of the mind so that by the end of that book their story will definately not be complete and he wont have to start the next book with completely new people.

allthough i will admit that a book in the ender serise without ender does seem weird. ill really miss him (even thoughhis aiua (or however you spell it) still existes it just aint the same thing)

well those were just my thaughts on the odds of a next book appearing...

That is exactly what I was saying. The Perer And Wang Mu characters still have a story to be told. Indeed, there is also a story in the Planet that they were in orbit above that the Desc~ virus came from. It is as if Card made outs for another book, and he never followed through. There is always another book to writs, another story to tell, and the story of Peter and Wang Mu is worth telling. As for the Virus things, that could be just an interesting side conflict that I, as well as many others, would like to see told.

-Hoping against hope that Mr. Card will one day write what I propose here, I am W-

I dunno, I think another book would be too soap opera-esque.

As I understand it, OSC is intending to write a book that follows Children of the Mind and introduces Bean's child to the new Peter. Personally, I think this is a mistake.

Posted by Da_Goat (Member # 5529) on :

I don't think it's a mistake, because for Bean to meet Ender/Peter, there would have to be some time travelling, which is always cool. Unless, of course, Card does something dumb with Outside, which he probably will. *sigh*

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

It'll be Bean's child, and there will probably be no time travel -- in the traditional sense -- involved. As you've noticed in the REST of the series, people traveling at relativistic speeds live effectively forever when compared to people who're stuck on a planet. Consequently, all that's necessary is for Bean's kid to be stuck on a near-light spaceship for a decade or two, and poof! effective time travel into the future.

Posted by Julian Delphiki Jr. (Member # 5882) on :

I do believe that is what was ment by "time travel" seeing as that is how Ender and Valentine happened to travel to the future. Of course, I could be wrong, and the person that posted befor you is an idoit. However, I do not think that that is the case.

So, would Bead's child be Julian Delphiki III?

Just thought I'd ask.

sheesh!
i hope beans child wont meet ender/peter. that wont be fun ay all. he doesnt even know ender and has no connection to him exept through bean and petra.
it would be soooo much better if bean meets him.
but bean is probably gonna die before he has much of a chance of doing anything.
talking of bean dying- i wonder if osc will invent some new technology that will enable bean to live longer. and if he does-will it change bean into a normal humanbeing? and if so... will bean want to do that? (exchange his genious for a longer life?)

Posted by Chandani (Member # 5879) on :

Why should he have to "exchange his genius"? The brain cells & synaptic connections he had already formed wouldn't be lost, only the prospect of continuous growth. Since he's already plenty smart and not likely to get less so, why on earth wouldn't he want to stop the perpetual growth that's killing him?

Seems like a no-brainer to me! [Wink]

yeah, well i geuss you just figured out just how good (or rather not good- as my grades are witnesses) i am in biology

Hee hee. If it had been up to me, school would have consisted of nothing but Art and English. With a reading break every other period.

Wow, this topic degreded faster than I would have hoped. Maybe I should have put a more comples proposal. Though that probally would not have helped that much. However, now that the topic has degraded so, I guess that I will "go with the flow" so to speak.

Anywho, Math is where my heart lies. However, I enjoy the reading and the writing, and write short stories frequently.

well...
I enjoy writing also but i geuss from my spelling no one would have geussed it.
math is ok for me but chemistry biology and phisics are totaly wasted on me.
i also love figuring out riddles(or rather cracking my head over them) anyone got some good ones? [Wall Bash]

OSC's Most Recent Appearances
may answer many questions.

I think it would be interesting if it turns out FTL travel has a "cost" of some sort that wasn't anticipated. I'm also interested in the ramifications of a relativistically slow world. Why would anyone want to live there? So that "normal" people could make the same kind of high yield investments currently enjoyed by relativistically fast people.

Another idea is that the relativistically slow people could monitor events on Earth, possibly intervene and stuff. Of course, that is my model for a series about how guardian angels really work. If I can ever think of a story that would be interesting viewed in minuteness.

But in a way, we have that on Hatrack with 1,000 people thinking about the same thing and submitting their thoughts.
