Last summer, I went to Romania to help out with a week long summer camp. It was a great experience and I met many people there that I continue to talk with even now (the internet is great).

Anyway, when I was there, I befriended a girl about my age who’s name is Mihaela. She is a great girl with a great heart. But I found that she loves reading, and reads all the time. She now works in Germany, away from her family, at a home where she does chores like laundry and groceries and such. I immediately wanted to share some of OSC’s writing with her since she had said that she has read some science fiction. Unfortunately, when I was over there, I did not have any on me (what was I thinking?!) and to ship something over there is very expensive.

But, it worked out, that one of my friends from America was going to be going back over there for 3 months to work at an orphanage. And that I could give my friend the books, and she would then give them to Mihaela.

So, to make a long story short, Mihaela read Rebekah and Ender’s Game, and is now reading Sarah. I wonder how much she is able to grasp of the stories, since English is her second language (out of Romanian, English, Spanish, German, and a little Italian) but she has said that she absolutely loves his writing. That she loved Rebekah because even though she has read the bible many many times, that she never imagined it the way OSC wrote it. That the scenery and all is much more real to her now.

And of course, she loved Ender’s Game. I thought it was so funny, that she describe Ender as a cute little boy. Cute! How does she know that? Hehe, I thought that was funny.

I tentatively plan to go back this summer, and believe me, I will be taking many more OSC books with me.

I first started reading OSC in Gemany while posted in Mannheim, the PX had all his books in the SF/Fantasy section and I had never read them and I had read most everything else. So the books can be found, just have your friend exploit a nice GI!
