im wondering if there is any real inspiration behind the names you all have chosen... or is just spurts of random letters conformed to make a name?

Well, I'm a woman, and I live on a farm..... [Big Grin]

Actually this is a pretty lame username. If I had it to do over, I would have chosen something else. But I didn't know Hatrack would become an addiction for me -- I was just signing in rapidly to ask a question about OSC.

On most other forums I go by the username of Redbud (usually followed by some numbers), and that SN does have more meaning to me, but I'm not going into the reasons for that here.

So how about you, laraem? Is your name just Lara and E.M. are initials, or does it mean something?

This is pretty much my SN for everything on the internet (like Ebay, banks, or anything else that requires one). I started a trend in my family because my brother usually goes by mikeneb and my Mom is usually judyneb. The neb part is a part of our last name, I'll leave you to figure that out.

'Da' because 'the' would be one letter too long.

'_' (underscore) because the first place I used this name at (and I forgot where that was) didn't allow spaces in your name.

'Goat' because I've had hair growing on my neck, much like that on a goat, since I was a toddler, which has caused many people to tauntingly or friendily(?) call me a goat. Of course, since 13 I'ev been shaving it, but the name stuck.

I just think 'o' is a much underused vowel in the English language. It speaks to my sense of equilibrium.

And the letter 'B' looks like sunglasses on their side. Which speaks to my habit of looking at things in quirky new ways.

'k' because it is a colloquialism of 'okay'. Which, as I'm sure you've noticed, describes my easy-going nature quite well.

As for the 'n', well the name didn't look quite finished, I thought to myself, "This username needs an end, an end... Aha!" It expresses my trenchant nerdplay.

As you might have surmised, it took me weeks to brainstorm and focus test this name. Quite an ordeal, and a pretty penny, let me tell you!

...

Oh, who am I kidding? My real life name is Bo Konon. I was just lazy.

Well, in middle school we learned some Latin in Language Arts to help our word comprehension. Anthropo sounded cool to me, and, well, that was the time everyone was stressing how you're supposed to have something pretty anonymous for your sn. What could be more anonymous than "man"?

I went by Anthropo on the net for several years. When I started on this forum, I tohught it might be time for a cahnge, so I registered as Black Mage(named after a character in the webcomic 8-bit theater) and used the login name Anthropo. When I came back over Christmas holidays and found my Black Mage sn no longer worked, I re-registered as Anthro, which Anthropo tended to get shortened to.

I was (and still am) doing Latin at school. I wanted something unique, so I combines the Latin and my first love - books - into one name.

Ea quae legit means "she who reads." The two words got shortened into one because a) I liked it that way and b) I wasn't sure if it would let me register with three names. Come to think of it, I was surprised that I could register with a space at all.

I was opening a Hotmail account, and I was trying very hard to think of something boring and unoriginal, like taking the first three letters of my last name (D-I-G) and making a bad and unamusing pun with it. Well, every version, perversion and permutation imaginable of DIG was already taken, so I wrote digging_holes as a kind of frustrated joke, and it wasn't already taken, so now it's my name on the web. I've grown rather fond of it, especially because people sometimes mistakenly assumes it means something.

Mine is appropriated from the Dark Tower series written by Stephen King. Roland Deschain is most likely the best character ever. And the series is complete and will be published this year. I just wish King had resisted re-writing The Gunslinger (The original rules ok!)

Posted by AnonymousNC (Member # 1544) on :

Glad to see so many folks here into the Dark Tower. I truely love that series. I'm just hoping King didn't sacrifice anything for speed in finishing the series - but I am glad it is finally finishing While I've been into King for years (25 at least), the Gunslinger was a new level IMHO

I'm sympathetic to eowyn on the Wolves of the Calla price. It was a major purchase for me to get Wolves and Crystal City at the same time. It's tough on poor folks to be hooked on books - especially two prolific authors like Card and King

BTW my boring name is to remain Anonymous here in North Carolina - real imaginative huh

mortuus

I actually took my name from Peter's "Locke" in Ender's Game when I first started using the internet 7 or 8 years ago...gradually it has evolved into "johnlocke059" as you are forced to come up with more complicated names to sign into things.

Posted by Kabederlin (Member # 6304) on :

You do realize John Locke was real guy right... And Demosthenes too... They were symbolic pseudonyms (I'm not gonna try and spell that one right...). John Locke believed in tabula rosa, or a clean slate. His philosiphies were the basis for the Declaration of Independence. Demosthenes warned Athens about the coming macedonian army and was later tried for treason and before they could execute him he took poison and killed himself.

I took my name from Tolkien's "Silmarillion", elder of the Two Trees of Valinor, original Light of the world before the Sun and the Moon.

Telperion the Silver Tree...
Laurelin the Golden Tree...

Telperion was the parent to the line of White Trees passed on to the Elves as a gift from the Gods for their love of the silver tree. The Elves then gave the Numenoreans, humans allied to the Elves and the Gods, a sapling of their own. Numenor was destroyed but a scion of it's White Tree went on to it's own offspring nation, Gondor, in the city of Minas Tirith.

I chose Telperion for my love of the Valar and the Eldar, and for my own facination with silver.

It's also a reminder to myself that I won't learn anything if I already think I know everything.

My name is supposed to be elvish for my real name.
I got it from an elvish name generator somewhere along the nets...

Ooh..just saw this one. My name is in honor of my daughter, who sings space opera. She's six, and sings all the time. One day I caught her singing a song about her Star Wars action figures (they were singing to each other). Hence, my daughter invented space opera.

I'm a research scientist, but in my spare time I run a fitness training business. I'm a Brit living in Canada, so FitBrit is the name of my one pro (me)personal training company.

what you're seeing is my real name... which I never use online... but since I can show a separate name from my login on this site, I figured I might as well!

My login, ethuilathelas, has special significance for me. It is actually two words: ethuil, which is the elvish word for spring (literally, "budding"), and athelas, the elvish word for the flower kingsfoil, which has healing properties and is part of a prophecy that helps identify Aragorn as the true king when he uses it to heal... some people. My favorite characters in LOTR actually.

so in other words, it can be just "budding kingsfoil" or even more simply, "spring flower", or it can be a budding tool of the true king, used for healing.

I too use this screenname for just about everything on the web.... but it's such a special meaning for me i don't like to explain it often, except to say it means "budding flower."

Many years ago, when the internet was still innocent, I conversed daily with friends in a chat room using the name 'Ammon', which is the name of a character in a future sequel in the Homecoming series. Anyway..

They were messing with me and calling me Ramen and AmmonRamen and stuff like that one day, and I decided that I liked the sound of AmmonRah and have used it for close to 10 years everywhere that I go on the web.

well, since this thread has been resurrected, I'll throw my two cents in.

Gryphonesse - it suits my temperament. I like animals, love mythological creatures. I'va always loved sci-fi and fantasy. My favorite critter has always been the gryphon, so there you have it.

edit: not to mention, my real name is hard to pronouce and very obscure...

This is basically a test. I've been trying to figure out how to post here for a couple of days--Site wasn't working well with Netscape... On IE now.

So, I guess I'll answer the question... Katarain is a variation of Katarina that I use on the web because Katarina is usually taken. Katarina is a name I gave myself many years ago when first coming online. I stole it from my cat, whom I named Katarina after a character on Days of our Lives... [Smile] What can I say? I was young...

My name has its own meaning, but it is also a small line from an obscure song of a semi-famous local band.

I guess you can guess my meaning (if you read the Shadow Saga)

FLCL w00t (I also like Trigun, Cowboy Bebop and Freakazoid!) Anyways... oh yeah my screen name. Well I was involved in a community theatre at one point in time and was in a heated discussion about which is better... duct tape, or crazy glue. It lead to a friend and I screaming across the stage "White Duck Tape!" and "Clear Krazy Glue!". (kinda like Snot Stew)

Is not!
Is too!
Isnot
Istwo

You get the picture if you don't remember the book.

I even had a street sign made; it hangs in my closet. [Smile]

My name was after one of the three wisemen that travelled to Bethlehem to visit the baby Jesus. Melchior, Balthasar, and Casper. Also, if any of you are anime watchers, The three "Maji," super computers in the anime Neon Genesis: Evangelion are named Melchior, Balthasar, and Casper. That is where I actually got the name from.
