I just began re-reading the Ender's series (it has been about 6 years) and I am a little confused about why Valentine felt so trapped by Peter in relation to their online personas. She felt like she had to keep writing Demosthenes' opinions when to me it seems she could have just as easily abandoned him if she felt uncomfortable and created a new persona more in line with her world view.

Well, for one thing, she's scared of what Peter might do to her if she backed out. But that's just the practical matter--deeper down, I think she really does love Peter and even believes in what he's doing, and she hates herself for it.

Just my guess though.

Since Valentine was writing as Demosthenes anomynously, she probably didn't feel too uncomfortable anyway. All Peter really needed out of Valentine was somebody with a different writing style than his.

As her authorship long surpasses that of Locke, you see her come to love her character's position. Some might equate it to the fine art of trolling message boards.

But when she writes as a historian, she doesn't write in the same style. Everybody assumes that it is a different person writing these books.

She isn't just a historian. She bashes the politicians of the day who support the Lusitania Fleet, among other issues I'm sure.
