when alvin is singing his song about being in jail and the trial, he then has one verse about a strange dream he had that he thought was someone else's dream that got into his head by accident. he mentions "little men" and a "golden ring" and some other stuff i can't quite remember. But is this a reference to LOTR or am i hallucinating?

Actually it's the acknowledgements (at the back of the book), not the preface. Good reading, nonetheless -- I highly recommend it.
