many years ago, I read seventh son. I guess at the time I had other books to read and the ending just didnt work for me, so I never went on to read the rest of the series.

but recently, I knew that if I went back and read seventh son that I would enjoy it, and I did. Now I am continuing on, through red prophet and now on to prentice alvin.

Just the other day, I took an alternate route home from work, and ended up going through a small 'town' in cincinnati, called carthage. It made me wonder, where did OSC get the idea of naming cincinnati, carthage? did he just pick the name or is there some historical reference there?

Also, I know that there are some short stories and/or poems that go along with the alving maker series. Anyone have a good idea what the proper reading order should be for the entire series?

oh, and its been a while since i posted but ive still been lurking faithfully! [Wave]

Many of the events and places in the Alvin Maker series are based loosely on events in the life of Joseph Smith, Jr., who organized the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (a.k.a. Mormons) and, according to members of the faith, a prophet of God. The town name Carthage likely came from the name of Carthage, Illinois, where Smith was murdered in 1844.

Welcome back to Hatrack. [Wave] Lurk all you like.

The short stories are in the legends 1 and 2 anthologies and I believe they come right before the Crystal City. I think theirs one other one that i read but i dont remember where it is.

The same thing happened with me. I remember a few years back picking up Seventh Son for a quick read, but it didn't really hook me at the time and I put it out of mind. Then a few monthes ago I came across the short story in Legends II about Alvin Maker and ended up picking up Seventh Son again, now absolutely enthralled with the series.

The poem, "Prentice Alvin And The No-Good Plow", is in Maps In A Mirror, and coincides with the third book, Prentice Alvin.

As far as the short stories go, I believe they fit in between Heartfire and Crystal City.. although I'm only as far as Alvin Journeyman now.
