Sometimes when I'm outside amidst in the trickles of sunlight that find their way through the canopy of branches I wonder what it would be like to be a tree, or more accurately, to have the body of a tree; rooted in the earth, depending on the elements for sustenance, and always, always reaching upward to bathe in the warmth of the sun. If I were a tree I think I would reach to the sun as a child, hoping to be picked up, reaches up to his mother. Hoping to one day reach that magnificent ball of glowing power. If I knew how far away it really was would I realize that I was never going to reach it and give up, or would I overcome the feeling that the impossible is impossible and continue to reach until my branches stretched far into the heavens? would I feel like I was a part of the forest or the forest was a part of me? I could know the forest in a way that no human ever could. I could feel the soil beneath my roots and know that the earth, my father, would always be there, supporting me and nurturing me. I would be free of the burdens of human concerns and be able to truly appreciate the cycles of life that take place all around me. I would see every sunrise and marvel at every sunset. Rain would not mean a ruined weekend but a surprise feast quenching me to the core. The notions of "hurry" and "boredom" would peel away from me like so much bark, leaving my true self to sway in the breeze. Seasons would come and go and I would remain, always growing, always reaching.

Thats beautiful Ramdac, I have grown up spending many, many hours in the woods. My favorite pastimes are camping, hiking, and fishing. I grew up in Minnesota and have spent weeks in the north woods, but have you ever really, truly just wondered off into the woods alone. (Tell someone where your going offcourse and stick to some sort of path) I think if you do ever just truly due this you will find you can become one with the forest and not be a visitor but just another creature beneath the trees. Its a refreshing experiance.

Thanks Orange, I didn't really think anyone was going to have anything to say but your feedback is great! I have in fact wanderd off the beaten path, weather it be in Michigan parks or at my grandparents cabin in the Poconos, and yes, it is the closest feeling you can get. It's that feeling which inspired this post. I thought I was the only one. Nice to know there are others on the same wave-length, you've made my day. [Big Grin] [Big Grin]

some of my favorite times were going off into the chugach mountains up in alaska, taking my dog and just sleeping under the stars it is really refreshing. alas i've never spent much time in the michigan area, so i do not know how your forests are different but ultimately most forests seem to be roughly the same.(if you want an experience where you are off on your own without anyone to bother you alaska is wonderful for that.)
