The Dig game by LucasArts wasn't exactly on par with LucasArt's other Adventure games, in my opinion. However, I thought that the best part of it was the dialogue written by OSC...I'm sure he had a lot of limitations becuase of the story, but he took the characters and really fleshed them out and made them interesting. The story wasn't amazing but the interaction between the three characters was really interesting. Which means that just about everything good about that game came from OSC. [Smile]

Which makes me really excited about the game Advent Rising that is going to have the story written by OSC. I was just wondering if anybody had any information on how that game was going. It looks like it should be coming out soon. Is all the dialogue written already? Is GlyphX just finishing up the rest of the stuff? Of course I shouldn't get my hopes up, since I don't own an XBox, and I doubt it will be ported the Mac. Which means I probably won't be able to play it.

Also I was wondering if there were still plans to make Robota into a game and a movie. I thought the book was great--the writing by OSC was great and the pictures by Doug Chiang were amazing. I can imagine a lot more great stuff coming out of the Robota universe. [Smile]

(I wonder if I can get it to run in a DOS window on W2K?)

You might need to download ScummVM.

Advent Rising was originally supposed to come out the end of last year, I believe, but GlyphX and Majesco agreed to extend the game's production to add a few more months of polish. Not sure when the new release date is, but I'm sure we'll know by e3 this May.

Since the game's story has to be locked into the schedule fairly early, I believe OSC has already finished his part of it. (But I've been known to be wrong about such things.)

I'm sure that Doug Chiang's studio has had interest in taking Robota further, but my guess (based on nothing but my own observations) is that the release of Robots has sort of scooped them for that space in the movie/game arena. It'd be hard to make Robota now without looking like an imitator.

I get where you're coming at. However, I can see Robota as a movie more easily then Robota as a game. Did you see those trailers? Really seemed to catch the essence of the book. (But then again, it's really hard to tell from a couple of two minute trailers.)

Then again, I get what you're saying about not wanting to feel like imitators. If they did make a movie I wouldn't want them to follow the storyline of the book...but rather a new story in the same universe. Maybe a sequel to the book, so they go hand in hand.

Anyway, my opinion doesn't really matter. And it's probably wrong anyway. [Wink]

I actually think that Robota could work BETTER as a game than as a film. It's much less about the plotline than it is about the world, and in my estimation, milieu stories can actually be better told in a game than in a movie ...

Hm...that may be true. But I'm having a hard time visualizing what sort of genre the game would end up in. A first person shooter is out of the question. An action/adventure could work, I think. I'm thinking maybe an adventure game like Uru: Ages Beyond Myst (with the 3D, and the puzzle solving elements) mixed with some action elements.

The fine line is trying to keep the gameplay elements of a game mixed with the elements from the book. We don't want it to be all narative with little gameplay, but we also don't want the story, or the world as you put it, to suffer at the hands of a game all about gameplay.

Hm. Well, since I don't have any experience with any of this I'm probably wrong about everything.

If I have not misunderstood something Advent Rising will be released to Xbox May 3 2005. It may still be delayed, however.
