Remember this from the book naming thread?

quote:
Accio: I hadn't thought of the fact that there might be a member of Ender's Jeesh in charge of that colony. Cool idea. Adds another character. But which ...
Personally, I would like for this character to have had as personal a relationship with Ender as possible. Vlad, Hot Soup, Crazy Tom and Dink sound interesting, and although I like the idea of fleshing out a lesser used character, none of these had a strong personal relationship with Ender. I'm a sucker for continuity. I want this reunion to really mean something.

To me, there is only one character that had a close relationship with Ender and we still have not gotten his character fleshed out. That character is Shen. I would LOVE to learn more about this guy.

What do you guys think?

It might be cool to see Ender meet Alai again...
Maybe Ender doesn't recognize him at first and they talk for a while, then as Alai walks past Ender to leave, he whispers "Saalam" in his ear just like he did in battle school, and Ender is just stunned for a long moment as recognition sets in.

I would like it to be Virlomi, so that she can be redeemed.

edit: I know that Virlomi wasn't in the Jeesh.

She would be my second choice. It's too bad that Ender never met her before though. And to think, if she had had her way she would have been Ender's sister-in-law. [Big Grin]

There's a good chance that Ender isn't going to be at a colony with a leader from his jeesh, or that the battle schooler is much older considering the whole space travel thing.
Regardless, how could you go wrong with Dumper, come on look at that name. [ROFL]

There is no law that it has to be someone from his jeesh. Could be a total stranger. OR it could be Virlomi. She is probably the front-runner in my own mind right now, particularly because she WASN'T in his jeesh and won't have personal loyalty to him; might even have hostility. Since one of the things Achilles jr. will be doing is trying to enhance his "father's" reputation AT ENDER'S EXPENSE (i.e., what did Achilles ever do compared to Ender, who after all was a xenocide of this beautiful hive queen species which was so cruelly misunderstood), then to have an unsympathetic colony head would be useful.

Then again, to have it be Shen would be cool. I did absolutely nothing with him in the Shadow books so he's still, in a way, tabula rasa. So I'll think about that.

Heck, I'm still thinking about all of them. Nothing's decided. But you're certainly discussing the stuff that has to be decided before I can even begin writing. Sorry that it can't be by vote, though. It has to be by my gut feeling - won't be a rational choice. Rational choices too often lead to bad books <grin>.

Yeah! I remember this one. Stuck on my mind ever since.

I thought about Alai first because of his relation with Ender.
I was thinking about someone close to Bean and Petra. Someone who will recognize Achilles Jr., his personality and the way he will look. But Alai had a large part in SOTG.

Mr. Card, Virlomi could be a great choice for the leader of this new colony! It would be quite interesting to see how she adjusts to finally meeting Ender outside of Battle School. However, the only reason that I would be wary of it is making it seem too obvious that everything is stacked against him. A hostile leader of the colony, and Achilles's "son" who wants to take him down. I wonder if it might seem a bit transparent. I was just thinking out loud, I'm sure theres a way to make it work. I imagine that the colonists might want Andrew to become the leader of the colony (because of his natural appeal as a leader: I'm assuming that most don't know who he is, at least at first), and once he refuses, his aura casts a shadow on the actual leader which might turn someone who would be otherwise friendly away from him.

Anyway, I would love to see Virlomi redeemed, it would definately add power her role in SoTG if she was able to recover from that fall.

I'll repeat what I said in the new book thread. I think having one of the failed Ender-candidates either running the colony or more likely just a member of it might be more interesting than having a jeeshmate as a major character.

She sorta did come back from her fall. Her convo with Suri.. Also pg 355 ... "There was biogrphy of Virlomi for instance, that made her an idealistic saint and blamed Sur, of all people, for the slaugughter that ended Virloimi's miltary carrer. Never mind that Virlomi had repudidated that interpritation, writing by ansible from the colony on Andhra. " Sorta you see.

I think there should be a Emo or Straight Edge kid in one of the books, that would be cool, btw, i have no reason why i brought this up.

Any reunion with a jeeshmember, or other friend from battle school, would be interesting. Especially if the character is relatively unexplored, like Shen. Of course, I would like to see how ender's book (The Hive Queen) has already changed opinion about him even in the eyes of the group that was closest to me. I think there needs to be some transition between people loving him as Ender, savior of the human race, and using his name as a curse word. Thinking about it though, the hive queen would have affected the public opinion of every member of the jeesh, not just Ender.

To refresh everyone’s memory:

quote:
Therefore it is quite possible that when Ender is done with his first colony experience (and has written The Hive Queen and The Hegemon), I could have him voyage first to that very same colony at about the time that this woman's child has come to adulthood.
Alai disappointed me in SOTG. I was looking forward to a claver way he would get out the situation when Virlomie appeared in front of him. I guess I forgot he was an adolescent….

I would like to read more about Shen. But is he going to be on a planet of the Hundred Worlds, Divine Wind? Does it get too complicated if that happens? I guess I’m thinking too much this early in the morning. Let me get another cup of coffee…..

There always the idea I dunno if it'd work but of it being Path with maybe the thing as a vareation of Bean's thing that they found in Achilles 2 and stuff. If so it could be Hot Soup.

I've never really liked the idea of the god-spoken being an off-shoot of Bean's condition, or Han Tzu being the founder of Path just because he's Chinese. Not everything has to be connected in some neat little way.

I don't think the planet will/should be path. Path was only a colony of the hundered worlds, after all, I think of it as coming about later than the colony that Achilles II will be on.

I like the idea of the colony leader being Virlomi. I always got the sense that until Speaker, Ender, after leaving earth, had never really been close to anyone but Valentine and Jane. And if the colony leader was one of his jeesh mates, especially Alai or Shen, I would think he would develop a very close relationship with them during his time on that planet. Those two scenarios obviously don’t work together, and I would rather see the colony leader be a new character or Virlomi, who Ender does not become close to. If it were one of his jeesh mates then either a) he would become close to them, which doesn’t jive with the way I perceived his journey or b) they would have some sort of conflict and not become close, and I would find that really tragic and not particularly enjoyable. I would rather Ender keep happy memories of his earthside friends and companions.

Just my 2 cents. Of course, I trust that anything OSC does will work out great.

I think you make some good points, Agnes Bean. Now that you mention it, I also assumed that Ender left behind everyone he ever knew except for Valentine when he left, and that's part of what makes his story so powerful. If it turns out that he met a jeesh member along the way, that detracts from that feeling somewhat. So I withdraw what I said about Alai. Virlomi is the best candidate.

You're also right about path. Since it's not one of the original hundred worlds, it couldn't be the world which Randi and/or any of the jeesh set out for. I'm pretty sure it says in one of the books that by the time Peter died, all of the hundred worlds had been discovered, and had a colony ship on the way if not there already. None of the colonies were founded yet though. Also, when Jane told Ender about Qing-jao and Wang-mu on Path, I don't think that he showed any sign of familiarity with the world.

For some reason, I came away from SotG with the idea that Suri and Virlomi ended up on the same colony, married. But then I'm a bit of a romatic/optomist, and I do tend a bit towards some cheesy ideas [Razz] If they were running a colony togeather, it would give Ender the chance to meet both, though.

I haven't read SOTG yet, so I'm not sure if he really gets a revival... (Our library has ordered 64 copies, 142 holds.)

But I would like Dink, personally. (Either him or Alai.) Dink... I think really was kind of the first mentor to have Ender look outside the game. To look around him and see who his true enemies were. Plus, I really liked him. ^_^

Shen all the way, Divine Wind in CotM i don't think explored Japanese culture enough, so Shen all the way!

Only if OSC is sure to mention that the Japanese still make anime in the future. [Big Grin]

Wow ... a hero of mine who has EVERYTHING stacked against him. You're right, I could never do that. [Taunt]
