In another thread OSC said that Hart's Hope was his worst selling novel, though I wasn't surprised that it didn't make the top half, I was completely taken aback that it was at the bottom! This book is incredibly powerful, beautifully written, and an overall wonderful edition to any OSC library. I think it's time this book gets the recognition it deserves! Unfortunately I don't have the slush fund on hand to bump up the sales, so instead I'm starting this thread.
And by the way, despite all the personal embarrassment I've caused myself for saying things like this, I still think that a Kubrick movie of Hart's Hope would be fantastic.

lol,I'm not sure it's possible to direct from beyond the grave. Although people seem to write books, and release cd's all the time even though they're dead. It would be a first.

Hobbes, if you like it, and Lady Jane likes it, I guess I really need to re-read it, since I respect your opinions and taste a lot.
My problem is, I can't get up the guts to do it. I found it after a long search right before a plane trip to CA, and so took it along to read on the plane-- while I was 6 months pregnant. Not a good choice. I read the whole thing, but was so horrified by the *SPOILERS * SPOILERS * SPOILERS* . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . whole having a baby with intent to sacrifice it thing that I haven't been able to bring myself to read it since, and honestly don't remember all the plot as well as I should.
So, that's why I don't have the guts to re-read Hart's Hope, and it's still sitting on my paperback sci-fi/fantasy shelf.

Yeah, I reading it for the first time was like watching a train-wreck for me. You are horrified, but you just can't look away.
I intend to read it again one of these days--I think I will appreciate it a lot more.

Hart's Hope begins very, very slowly, and not with the main character. It has hideous things happen in it, and the ending is depressing (and some people even say it doesn't HAVE an ending). What's not to love?
But don't worry, Hobbes. I know if I try hard enough I can write a book that will sell even worse. After all, my style is deteriorating as I get older and all my series get worse with each volume. It's those standalone novels that haven't yet followed the trend. I'm working on it.

I just bought Hart's Hope...for 75 cents at a library discard sale. Every time I read it, I have to spend at least a week with some Jerry Spinnelies, my happy books, but reading Hart's Hope just seems to be something I have to do at least once a year.
