My friend is doing a poster on SotG for his English class, and he asked me to help him think or look for quotes in the book that would catch someones interest. This is assuming that most of the people reading this are not huge Sci-Fi readers. He's looking for some quotes that catch the readers interest, but also give a little bit of info on the book itself.

Since Hatrack has so many great readers that can pick stuff out of OSC books very well. I'll ask here. What quote/s do you think would catch someones interest in SotG and give the reader some info on what goes on in this book?

Much Thanks.

I like the quote from the chapter "Jeesh". It was said by one of the jeesh members (maybe Dink? I'm not sure).

"We didn't invent war, we're just really good at it."

I think that might catch someone's interest, and the book is largely about military geniuses waging war.

Hi, I'm Hamson's friend he spoke of. I saw that earlier but I think the quote I have now from bean and Rackham's meeting in the chapter "Bargain" is pretty good. Where Rackham is explaining that humans will always fight unless all power is given to one person, and it might as well be peter. Thanks for your help though I think ill use that in my summary mayhaps. Bleh, I don't look forward to writing this summary, its gonna be a toughy.

A new guy! Wow, hope you plan to stick around.

No problem. Good luck with your summary.

Lol yeah, I just found out about this thangy from the Hamson. So i think ill stick around, but we'll see, I don't have too much to offer in the way of political arguments.

You don't have argue politically. Its a place to discuss anything, mostly. And be silly.

Aye, that is something I'm quite good at. But yeah politics not my thing. so... any more quote ideas?

Snatched this one from the BNU discussion:

quote:
"Life is full of grief, to exactly the degree we allow ourselves to love other people."
--Chapter 13, p. 166 of Shadow of the Giant

quote:
Chapter 13 Found: "Nobody ever completely means what they say. Even when they think they're telling the truth, there's always something hidden behind their words."
quote:
"'I was just thinking.'
'You're still young enough to believe that will get you somewhere,' said Rackham.
'No,' she said. 'No, I'm older than you think. I know I can't think my way out
of being who I am.'"

Hope those help.

You see some of these quotes and it makes you remember how really brilliant OSC is. I come here all the time and read these (sorry) sort of inane essays on peanuts, ice cream, local theater, etc. And it's like ... Okay, WHY do I care how great Card thinks Ice Cube is?

And the reason that I care is because the man has an absolute stunner of a brilliant mind. I mean, look at this quote:

"Life is full of grief, to exactly the degree we allow ourselves to love other people."

Now that is a huge truth distilled into the clearest language possible and the fewest words.

Wow, TL. Looks like you're getting reviewed.

It will always be the curse of the world's greatest thinkers to be misunderstood in their own lifetimes .....

Posted by Orson Scott Card (Member # 209) on :

But most people assume that, when they are disagreed with, it merely means that they were misunderstood, so if they just say it again, more loudly and emphatically, THEN everyone will agree with them.

Posted by TL (Member # 8124) on :

Most people would be wrong to assume that. In my case, however, it is true. Everyone really will agree with me if I just keep repeating myself.

Besides, if it's repeated enough times by as many people it will become true. Just ask the political pundits.

"If everyone is saying it, it must be true."
