This was the title of my sister's most recent online journal entry. [Smile] She's been dabbling with a story for 6 or 7 years and in the last month or two she's been writing like a maniac. I finally got her to think seriously about refining it and sending it in for publication.

Evidently, she started reading the OSC writing books that we got her for Christmas. [Big Grin] Here's what she wrote:

Okay, after reading some of "Characters & Viewpoint" by Orson Scott Card I am now going to totally and completely revamp everything, which is what I had planned to do in the first place but I've realized that in order to do a somewhat decent job I need to have EVERYTHING all physically in front of me in order to do that. So I am printing out EVERYTHING I've typed up so far and I'm going to gather all of my notebooks that have anything to do with this story and I will start from there. Whew!
I love the way he writes in that book. It's not discouraging, but quite the opposite. He peps you up using examples from his works and many other works both mistakes and successes. The way he breaks things down is very nice and understandable. He just get's you going "Yes! Duh! How freaking logical!" So I am quite excited although I know there is a lot of work ahead of me [Smile]

Fun, huh?

Are his books on writing available at Barnes and Noble without having to order them?

Yep, at least at the B&N where I live.

Now i can retire. I have accomplished all that a writer can hope for.

I'm sure that about 99% of the population of Hatrack, NOT including myself, will refuse to let you retire. Or they'll try to.

I'm that 1%.

Go ahead, OSC. Retire. Never touch a keyboard again. Encourage your fellows writers at Tor and Del Ray to do the same.

I hear the beach is nice this time of year.

I waited weeks to get Character and Viewpoint from the library, but now that I have it, I've felt too busy to read it much. Yeah, I know I've done about 300 posts in that time, but I can post on my "cigarette break" from work.
