I'm not so impressed, actually. This baby is living in the Seattle area. I'll see the kid maybe twice before she goes to college. What's fun about that?

Sure, it's a nice name. But since Geoff and Heather wouldn't tell anybody in advance about the names they were thinking about, lest anyone else think they were entitled to a vote, I gave the baby the working title "Rosalita," and now I hear everybody talking about Zoe, and I wonder, What happened to my little grandbaby Rosalita?

So I'm ambivalent. Happy for Geoffrey and Heather, who will be splendid parents; but looking around and wondering, Where's the grandbaby people kept telling me I'd enjoy so much? <grin>

My father-in-law had 6 kids. All he asked was that one of them name a daughter Monica Veronica. Alas, he got a Monica but no Monica Veronica.

I wormed my way out of disappointing him by only having boys.

Mr. Card, you obviously need to do more west-coast book tours now. [Big Grin]

Oooh! Or you could set a story in Seattle and go spend lots of time there for research. Get writing! [Wink]

Congratulations to the proud parents and even prouder grandparents!

I think Zoe is a very pretty name. Her middle name is even prettier. Can't wait for pics.

December is a good month to have a birthday except the whole present combo thing people always seem to do. I have fond memories of my parents working very hard to make my birthday separate from the holidays. I am sure Geoff and Heather will do the same. Ha... come to think of it Washington is a good state to be born in, as well.

Welcome, Zoe.

Posted by Scott R (Member # 567) on :

Okay, so congrats and all . . .

But how is her middle name pronounced?

Lie-anna?

Lee-ahnah?

**

I was very impressed with Seattle when I was there for Writers of the Future. The people seemed very pleasant, the weather was nice, and the landscape beautiful. It was a welcome escape from 95 degree, 95% humidity of the east coast in August.

Zoë Lyanna Card = [ZO-ee lee-AN-nah CARD]

Thanks for all the congratulations, everybody! I can attest that she is absolutely adorable, with a full head of thick, dark-brown hair, inquisitive eyes, and the cutest little smile. We actually had nurses telling their replacements on the next shift, "Remember to check the Card baby's vitals, her bili levels, and her amazing CUTENESS!"

To answer Joldo, no, we're not naming any of our children Ender, Valentine, Peter, Lanik, Ansset, Patience, Jazz, Alvin, Itzak, Deaver, Diko, and for heaven's sake not Stevie [Angst] so don't even ask. (I guess we could do a sort of name-exchange program ... Joss Whedon and George R. R. Martin could have grandkids with those names, and we'll keep the ones we've got.)

Both parents are doing well, too, by the way, with the proper mix of overconfidence and paranoia. Heather is recovering beautifully, and I'm re-learning how to change a diaper. (The poopy side faces INWARD when you wrap it up, right ..?)

Sincere Congratulations!

I've always liked the name Zoe, I first heard at www.sluggy.com as one of the characters is named Zoe.

Best of luck with the new baby.

I first heard the name Zoe as the love interest/wife in the James Herriott books (sorry for any spoiler babies out there, but the books are like 20 years old now.) Also had a drama teacher named Zoe, and now I have a step mother named Zoe. All lovely people. Wish I'd thought of it. Instead we have Hannah 945789.

Congratulations!

I always thought we had a hard time coming up with names, having to keep track of all the cousins' names so we didn't re-use them.... But you're starting off with a huge list of character names that are crossed off the list! What a challenge that's going to be. Fortunately, many of them are rather ... otherwordly. [Smile]

Yes, unless you have the foresight to use a diaper service. Then you don't have to worry about inside, outside, whatever -- just drop it in the pail and let them deal with it. [Big Grin]

Very pretty baby.

It reminds me of when my boys were first born and I watched them for hours at a time. Every expression, every hand movement, the whole body language thing became so precious to me that when I saw those same actions in complete strangers, I felt a connection to them.

Babies are very good for the world.
