I just finished reading Destination: Void by Frank Herbert. This book totally blew me away and without giving anything away let me just wet your appetite with this overview: Ship full of cloned attempting to develop a Computer Consciousness. What I really found fascinating was the fact that they delve into questions like "what is the seat of consciousness?", and "What is the purpose of consciousness?"

For all of you who are looking for a nice one-book sci-fi story, give it a try.

Yeah, but it's been years. 18 of them, now that I think about it.

I've actually got both versions of that one.
