So, in response to a thread over on the Other Side, I googled "best books", just to refresh me on some of the classics. Well, I found a site here which gave a pretty good list. It's a modern list, so it didn't include the old classics. But if you scroll down to number 59 on The Readers List, you'll see a book that you may recognize.

I wondered if it would be on there. I thought it should be, and I still think it should be higher than that (come on, Catch-22? A miserable read. And I haven't even heard of some of those other books). But I still thought it was pretty neat some of Hemingway's books and stuff. Just thought I'd share that. [Smile]

Hmm... I apparently have quite different tastes than these people. I've only read four of the board's list, and nine on the readers' list. And some of the ones from the readers list were ones I didn't like.

When people do lists like this, I wish that they'd bother giving an explaination for the selection rather than just an arbitrary list.

Wow! I was shocked at the number of Robert Heinlein books on the list. I know that Stranger in a Strange Land is widely regarded as a pretty good book and the Puppet Masters holds popularity in some circles, but I was impressed at the recognition of some of his other works. Actually, the readers list contains quite a few sci-fi/fantasy books, which I think is great. So often the more "academic" lists of great books leave off anything written in this genre.

I closed it when I saw that ULYSSES by James Joyce was listed as #1. No thanks.

The Reader list is far better than the board list. Obviously for the includion of EG and also for Naked Lunch, The Hitchhikers Guide and a higher ranking for Clockwork Orange.
