I was wondering, when did the Formic War happen? Or when were all these place and groups like Lusitania or the Hedgemon made and discovered? There's never an actual year or date. Until Speaker for the Dead and Xenocide. But even then OSC only says that it was about 5,000 years since Ender and Valentine were on Earth. I can see why OSC might be doing this- to avoid predicting the future- but still, wouldn't it make the books a little better to involve dates? Rather than keep us guessing? After all, some people might see this is in hundred years, others might wait more or less. It would be nice to know.

Not really. Writing it that way leaves people (now and in the future) to use their own imagination to guess when we'll have these things.
