This will probably never happen, and I'm not exactly hoping it will, but don't you think OSC could write a good novel set in the world of Pokemon? Like a Ender's Game etc., the Pokemon world is full of intelligent kids; and I think the original Pokemon story starts out with a kid finding Pikachu (who lives on electricity) in the walls of his house, which is vaguely reminiscent of OSC's "In the Dragon's House."

Having read neither many Pokemon stories nor "In the Dragon's House," I may be way off here; but there are probably a lot of worse tie-ins OSC could do.

I sincerely hope that such a day will never come.

Actually, at least according to GameSpot, a lot of Pokemon games are pretty good (7.0--7.9 is "good"; 8.0--8.9 is "great"). I've never played one, though; it would drive me crazy to know that I couldn't get all the Pokemon without linking with a nonexistent other player.

The games are fine (at least the earlier Game Boy ones that I've played), but the stories are childish and lame. I don't think that Card's mature and intelligent writing style would fit. Besides, aren't all the Pokemon stories writen in Japan?

OH my. *wipes tears out of eyes* That was one of the best topic titles I've ever read.

That being said, the day Card writes a novel about Pokemon will be the same day Apple and Microsoft have a friendly merge, Robert Jordan finishes The Wheel of Time, and Hell froze over.

So yeah, don't count on it. [Smile]

(I really like the Pokemon games, BTW. Peope can criticize me all they want, but if you get over the saccharine layers of the game, you find a very deep and enjoyable strategy RPG.)

I'd definitely want OSC's Pokemon novel to be as mature and nuanced as any other OSC novel. I just thought the idea of intelligent kids raising creatures to fight each other might make a good OSC story. In fact,

SPOILERS FOR HOMECOMING SERIES

maybe this could be set in the Homecoming-series Earth just before it was destroyed, as the humans were genetically engineering a lot of different creatures at that point.

Well for one thing, OSC has spoken against writing "fan-fiction" existing in somebody else's universe multiple times.

So even if, for some reason, Nintendo/GameFreak actually wanted a novelization of Pokemon, and asked OSC of all people, I'm pretty much positive he would refuse.

But I must give you props for coming up with one of the craziest concepts I've ever heard: a novelization of Pokemon, by OSC, set in the Homecoming series' Earth. [Smile]

If OSC were to write a Pokemon novel, it'd be from the perspective of one of the Pokemon, raised to gladatorial combat and only able to speak its own name aloud.

aragorn - I'm not sure that OSC would turn down the offer for that reason. Hopefully he would turn it down for many many other reasons, but I don't think that one.

I say this because, not only has OSC broken his own rule about writing fanfic when asked, he has also written a novelization of a movie and a video game. Naturally, none of these were in universes of his creation. I can go ahead and assume that he is very selective in his deciding if and when to do this, but, based on past writings, I would say that it is not a line he will not cross.

(Edited for numerical accuracy.)

Actually there is an author's note in "The Abyss" (the only movie adaptation OSC has done) that explins why he did that one, which also explains why he hasn't done any others. I don't know of any video game novels he has done.

Plus, a story in someone else's world, or even a novelization of someone else's story is not neccesarily "fanfic".

Yeah, I recall the author's note in The Abyss saying that it was written under special circumstances, but that doesn't preclude special circumstances from arising again (though I doubt Pokemon would fit those).

I'm not sure if the up and coming novel, Capitol, is considered the novelization of a video game, or if he created the universe that the game will use, but I know it is in direct conjunction with a video game. Again, very special circumstances, but not binding him from doing it again.

Also, the fanfic I was referring to was "The Originist" (written in Azimov's Foundation universe for the collection Foundation's Friends). He includes an extensive authors note that explains why he wrote that and why he broke his own rule and felt it acceptable. I take this to mean that in the mind of OSC, sometimes, under the right circumstances, fanfic is an acceptable course of action.

I'm still not saying that he would ever consider writing a Pokemon story, just that I don't think that that would be the main, or ever a large, reason that he wouldn't.

(I did notice that I had pluralized "movies" and "video games" in my first post and considered revising, but didn't, for some unknown reason. I guess I will now.)

I was hoping this would be a discussion of what type of Pokemon OSC would be.

I don't know him, but he strikes me as a Mankey [Smile]

Shades of 1984 here-- remember the discussion Winston and his co-worker have? Where the co-working is lauding all of Big Brother's efforts to pare down the language? So that, in the end, there will be only two words: 'Big Brother.'

MightyCow, are you joking? OSC is a Slowbro, because he takes his sweet time. He also has the ability to emit a ray of psychic energy, and evolved when a shellfish bit his tail.

Good times.

Ah, that could be right. I just saw him do a scratch attack/low kick combo once, and then he danced around and ate a banana.

Maybe he's got the ability to be many pokemon?

Does someone have to be a fan in order to write fanfic? And, yeah, being licensed to create a work in someone else's creative universe is not fan fic. It's "Feed the Baby of Love." Not that I would necessarily put that on the same level as a hypothetical Pokemon novel.

I actually disliked the conclusion of "Feed the Baby of Love." Perhaps I'll dig up an old thread about it to discuss that.

Then he'd be a Ditto.

Flaming Toad is physic. FT is now a Physduck.

I am Mew!

I could see OSC novelizing that battle between the two Metapods where they were squaring off in the "HARDEN!!!" attack.

Of course they would both grow up to have fulfilling marriages with members of the opposite gender to continue the net of life.

My only hope is someday far into the future you'll find this thread again and realize what an idiot you were when you were younger.

I'm so glad I played Pokemon yellow when I was younger, have read many OSC novels, including Songmaster, and most of his essays at the Ornery American, just because it means I could enjoy the full hilarity of that post.

...

I think my favorite part about this post is the poster's striving-for-wit-and-failing-because-he-misspelled-part-of-kamikaze.

Seriously, if you're going to be a condescending dip, at least make an effort to cover your own rear first.

I like this thread, it has people fighting one another over the like or dislike of a series, not about the actual subject on what it would be like if OSC wrote within that universe.

This like other manga's from japan have been turned into kids only shows with greatly diminished thought and violence - whereas the originals usually do have some integrety within them. Therefore people are asking how osc would keep such a integrety in english.

The day Card writes a book involving pokemon, i will begin to vomit uncontrollably. Then on my deathbed I will read the book and realize it is actually REALLY good. Orson Scott Card is THAT good of a writer.

The only way I would ever read a Pokemon book was if OSC wrote it. BUT if it was writen it would have to be changed becuase if you watched the TV show religiously for like 4 years like I did, you would know that the characters were not inteligent at all, and the plot lines were very week. Although the show wasnt so good, there was always room for delvelopement of characters and posibilities for a really good stories. If OSC brought a life and inteligence to the characters and story, like he does in his other books, the book would be amazing. OSC couild write an amazing Pokemon book if he wanted to. I would read it.
