I was recently reading several books by Neal Stephenson, specifically the Baroque Cycle, and I realized they are fairly similar to Card's books in being that they are a sort of historical fiction, and use actual historical characters to deepen the plot. The similarity between the two isnt deep, but I thought that many of the people here who enjoy Mr. Card's books might enjoy Stephenson's. He delves into several very interesting topics, such as coding, mythology, and even the creation and use of language, I find it truly fascinating.
I recommend: (In the Baroque Cycle) (Quicksilver, The Confusion, The System Of The World,) (Single Books) The Diamond Age, Snow Crash, Cryptonomicon,
I will warn that they are slightly more adult than Mr. Card's books, but nothing like Anne Rice &c.

The Diamond Age and Snow Crash were great, Cryptonomicon was decent, but the Baroque Cycle was so excrutiatingly slow I gave up about a third of the way through.

If you stick with them they get freaking amazing. the second and third books are some of the best I have ever read. I think the second is best overall but the end of the third... wow.
