I don't think they quite...GET the books.

Book-a-Minute:

Speaker for the Dead

Xenocide/Children of the Mind

I love Book-a-minute.

Some of my favorites are the ones about Jordan's books, and the "Collected Work" of McCaffrey.

Posted by SteveRogers (Member # 7130) on :

The people who write them...come off as so insulting and condescending.

The people who write them don't seem to have read the books.

Also funny. Don't forget the funny.

Some of my favorites:

I, Robot
quote:
Isaac Asimov
Here's a logic puzzle thinly disguised as a story.
Reader
Hurray!
THE END

2001: A Space Odyssey
quote:

HAL
I'm evil. (kills astronauts)
Dave Bowman
I must shut you down now, HAL.
HAL
Daisy, Daisy...
Dave Bowman
Now I must finish this mission alone.
(STRANGE THINGS happen, and they MAKE SENSE.)
Reader
Wow. I understand the movie now.
THE END

The Dragon Reborn
quote:

Rand al'Thor
Being the Dragon Reborn stinks. I'm out of here.
(Moiraine and the gang CHASE him. But even though they are on HORSES, and he is WALKING, they never CATCH UP. This is supposed to be MYSTERIOUS but is really just a plot CONVENIENCE for Robert JORDAN.)
Perrin
I hate wolves.
(Mat and others show up out of NOWHERE. This is supposed to be MYSTERIOUS but is really just a plot CONVENIENCE for Robert JORDAN.)
Rand al'Thor
I am the Dragon Reborn. (kills the EVIL SUPREME BAD GUY)
Robert Jordan
Fooled you! That wasn't really the EVIL SUPREME BAD GUY! Now I can write forty more books!
THE END

They do seem to have read the introductions, though.

They've got it reversed though. Ender's Game was written so that Speaker would make sense. It's not that Speaker was written to juice more money from the series.

Steve, you're taking it way too seriously.

My favorite one, of one of my favorite books:

quote:

The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress

Robert A. Heinlein:
I have a plan for the perfect revolution.

Reader:
Interesting, tell me more.

Robert A. Heinlein:
Step One: Live on the moon.

Reader:
Uh....

Robert A. Heinlein:
Step Two: Discover an omnipresent sentient computer.

Reader:
*sigh*

THE END

I laughed very hard when I discovered that the Xenocide/Children of the Mind one was actually true, if exagerated.

Interview With A Vampire left coke sprayed all over my desk.

But then I got mad. You do not mess with my Vonnegut. You mess with my Vonnegut, I will find you and destroy you. DEATH

The Belgariad wasn't so funny...

quote:
Garion
I'm an heir to something. I must mature into a man and rule the world.
Friends
While we're sorting out each of our personal crises, we'll help you kill badguys.
(They DO, and gradually all the badguys DIE except for one who is turned into a SNAKE.)
THE END

But it was more than made up for by the Mallorean.

quote:
See The Belgariad.

They did reverse the Speaker for the Dead/Ender's Game thing, but it still was funny. Mean, maybe, like so much comedy is, but funny.

In truth, we enjoy and respect most of the books lampooned at this site. Our intent is lighthearted, self-mocking parody, not legitimate literary desecration. We made fun of our own books; we weren't any more sincere when we made fun of the others."

I read my first Vonnegut yesterday, and my second, and third, and fourth and fifth, and then took a break with heinlein.

The best ones are their summaries of Frank Herbert's Dune novels. They only do the first 4 though. I get the impression that they just couldn't handle 5 and 6!

Parody's fine. I enjoy a good one. And if a book is really great, then they can't possibly mock it without being inaccurate, right? So the inaccuracies are actually a GOOD sign <grin>.

What's disturbing are those sad people who feel the need to write long, vicious attacks on works of literature they simply don't understand. They're the ones who want to punish people for writing books they don't like. That is not at ALL what these wonderful parodists are doing. I'm just glad books of mine made their list.

Personally, I love book-a-minute. [Big Grin] Always have.

For the longest time, I actually had all of the book-a-minutes as a text file on my PDA. I'd bring it out at nerdy parties (about the only kind I'm ever invited to) and we'd laugh and laugh.

*wipes tear* Good times.

crude but funny....

I love one on The Collected Work of Raymond E. Feist. It is so true.

quote:

Character #1
I'm goodhearted and honest.
Character #2
I'm goodhearted and sneaky.
(They save the world six times.)

THE END

FWIW... Regardless of what anyone writes about Xenocide - I dig that book. It's so jam-packed with ideas I feel like I could read it a thousand times and still not get 'it' - forget about in a minute!
